Who can you trust with your memories? iPhone photo storage options compared!

Best storage options for your photos

Comparing the best online photo storage options from Flickr, Google+, 500px, Dropbox, Amazon, Instagram, Facebook, and more!

We've talked on numerous occasions about how great of camera you have included with your iPhone and have taken a look at some great photography apps to accompany it, but once you take all those photos and edit them to perfection, where are you going to store them? You can store them locally on various devices and hard drives, but what about in the cloud? Other than Photo Stream, what are other cloud storage options for all those memories you're accumulating?

Facebook, Instagram, Twitpic, and other non-options

Before we jump into the various great options out there, let's first discuss the fact that posting to Facebook, Instagram, Twipic, and any other little photo sharing service is not good enough. It may be easy to think "oh, I posted that to Facebook, so if anything happens, I know I can always retrieve my photo from there." Well, yes, as long as you don't cancel your account or do something that gets you banned, your photos are there, but even though Facebook has a "high resolution" option, it's not actually full resolution. The max size Facebook will save your photos is 2048px along the longest side. A photo taken with an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 is larger than this.

The quality of your images saved on services such as Instagram, Twitpic, and other "little" sharing services is even worse. You should not consider these as good options for storing photos.

So if Facebook and Instagram aren't good choices, then what are? Between Flickr, 500px, Dropbox, Google+, and Amazon Cloud Drive, you're sure to find a great option to meet your needs.

Flickr

Flickr just updated with an enticing new overhaul that includes 1TB of free storage. Yes, 1 terabyte. For free. Flickr also features a gorgeous new interface and an established community of users. In addition to just storing your photos, you can also publicly share them and join groups and discussions. If you're serious about photography or simply just looking for a place to save your images, Flickr is an excellent option and completely free (with upgrade options).

500px

500px is a unique choice in that, in addition to being a place to store photos, you also have the option to sell your photos in the 500px market. It's also a social network where you can follow specific users and like and comment on their work. 500px does have more of a "professional" vibe that markets towards quality photography, so if you identify yourself as a photographer, 500px will likely be a great fit.

A free account allows 20 uploads per week, and accounts with unlimited uploading begin at $25/year.

Google+

Although Google+ is primarily a social network, it also offers a solid option for photo storage. With the Google+ app, you can even choose to automatically upload your photos from your iPhone to Google+ so that you don't even have to remember to do it yourself. However, when uploading from your iPhone, Google+ will store them at "Standard size" which is a max of 2048 pixels on the longest side. If you want to store full size images, you must upload from your desktop.

Full size uploads count against your Google Drive storage quota which starts at 15 GB with a free account. Paid accounts begin at $2.49/mo for 25 GB, but may be changing in the coming weeks.

Dropbox

If you're not into the social integration associated with Flickr, 500px, and Google+, Dropbox is another excellent choice for storing your photos. It's not a social network, but strictly a storage service; however, if you do wish to share your photos, you can share a link to your folders and Dropbox will nicely display them for you. You can also set up the iPhone and iPad app to automatically upload your photos when you launch the Dropbox app.

A free Dropbox account includes 2 GB (with the ability to reach 18 GB), and "Pro" accounts start at $9.99/mo for 100 GB.

Amazon Cloud Drive

Amazon Cloud Drive is a storage service that's similar to Dropbox, and with the Amazon Cloud Drive Photos companion app for iPhone, you can easily upload and view your saved photos.

A free Amazon Cloud Drive account includes 5 GB of storage with paid plans starting at $10/year for 20 GB.

Your favorite way to store photos?

These are just a few of the different options available for storing your precious photographs, and if we missed any good ones, we want to know. Do you use a different service that you believe to be superior to these? Or do you not trust your memories in the hands of a 3rd party and back up onto external hard drives, instead? We want to know your system!

Personally, I'm going to start using Flickr to store everything that's important to me and 500px for photos I'm particularly proud of and value as art.

What about you?

13 Highlights From One of the Biggest Furniture Fairs in the Country

ICFF?or the International Contemporary Furniture Fair?is one of the biggest furniture shows this side of Milan. And like its Italian rival, ICFF is closely watched by critics, who see it as a gauge of broader cultural trends. For example, the glitzy 2000s correlated with escapism from political turmoil and war. The post-2008 fair was full of inexpensive, DIY projects, supposedly reflecting life after the recession. Last year, as the recovery took hold, critics saw a resurgence of excess and glamor.

Shares grind higher, yen rebounds on minister's remarks

By Herbert Lash

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Global equity markets resumed this year's rally on Monday, driven higher by a flurry of merger and acquisition activity, while a recent tumble in the yen against the dollar halted after Japan's economy minister suggested the currency might have weakened enough.

Despite major American and European stock indices being up double digits - the U.S. benchmark S&P 500 index is almost 17 percent higher so far this year - investors still see better returns ahead in equities than elsewhere.

Deals such as Yahoo's $1.1 billion bid for Tumblr indicate that companies continue to search for growth through acquisitions despite record high share prices, a bullish sign for stocks. Yahoo was up 1.21 percent at $26.84.

In another deal, generic drugmaker Actavis Inc. , itself the subject of takeover speculation, said it would buy specialty pharmaceutical company Warner Chilcott Plc for $5 billion in stock.

Actavis rose 2.7 percent to $128.89, while Warner Chilcott gained 3.33 percent to $19.85.

"We got a lot of merger announcements this morning. It means there's a lot of appetite for equities and that's good for the market," said Giri Cherukuri, head trader at OakBrook Investments LLC in Lisle, Illinois.

"Stocks are not too over-valued and the economy is getting better," he said. "As long as the economy continues to improve, the market should be able to maintain these levels."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 16.48 points, or 0.11 percent, at 15,370.88. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 2.64 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,670.11. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 2.01 points, or 0.06 percent, at 3,500.97.

MSCI's all-country world equity index <.miwo00000pus> rose 0.51 percent to its highest since June 2008.

Britain's benchmark FTSE 100 <.ftse> index rose to its best closing level since late 2000, while the FTSEurofirst-300 index of leading European shares <.fteu3> rose 0.31 percent to close at 1,252.09.

European shares hit five-year highs, boosted by strength in German stocks and a travel sector lifted by a surge in Ryanair after it reported better-than-expected earnings for the past year. Ryanair rose 6.87 percent to a record 6.765.

The Japanese economy minister, Akira Amari, said the yen's excessive strength had largely corrected and further weakness could damage Japan's economy.

Analysts, however, said any sharp dip in the dollar against the yen was a buying opportunity as Tokyo was committed to easier monetary policy. While the dollar fell sharply on Amari's comments and remained down on the day, it was off the session low.

The dollar was last 0.44 percent lower at 102.47 yen, having hit a low of 102.19. Last Friday, the dollar reached a high of 103.30 yen.

The euro gained 0.5 percent against the dollar to 128.72.

Gold had been on track for its longest run of losses since March 2009, weighed by speculation that the Federal Reserve might rein in its economic stimulus program.

Investors have been dumping gold, which is down about 20 percent this year, while stocks and the dollar have risen on an improving global economic outlook. Gold-backed exchange-traded funds have had massive outflows in recent months.

Spot gold hit a low of $1,338.95 an ounce on Monday, its weakest since April 16, but later rebounded, rising $25.20 to $1,383.34 an ounce.

The beginning of the end of the Fed's massive bond-buying program might come sooner than many investors think if recent gains in the U.S. labor market do not prove fleeting.

U.S. government debt prices slipped after an early rebound from last week's sell-off as the dollar weakened against the yen. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was unchanged in price to yield 1.9524 percent.

Brent crude traded near break-even, weighed by ample supplies, weaker demand for fuel and a strong dollar.

Brent crude for July was up 40 cents at $105.04 a barrel. U.S. crude rose 79 cents to $96.81.

Less sleep associated with increased risk of crashes for young drivers

May 20, 2013 ? A study by Alexandra L. C. Martiniuk, M.Sc, Ph.D., of The George Institute for Global Health, Sydney, Australia, and colleagues suggests less sleep per night is associated with a significant increase in the risk for motor vehicle crashes for young drivers. (Online First)

Questionnaire responses were analyzed from 19,327 newly licensed drivers from 17 to 24 years old who held a first-stage provisional license between June 2003 and December 2004. Researchers also analyzed licensing and police-reported crash data, with an average of 2 years of follow up.

On average, individuals who reported sleeping 6 or fewer hours per night had an increased risk for crash compared with those who reported sleeping more than 6 hours. Less weekend sleep was significantly associated with an increased risk for run-off-road crashes. Crashes for individuals who had less sleep per night (on average and on weekends) were significantly more likely to occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

"This provides rationale for governments and health care providers to address sleep-related crashes among young drivers," the study concludes.

Hell No, Tumblr Users Won't Go To Yahoo!

tumblr yahoo noooooWe’ve all by now heard about how Yahoo is trying to get some “cool” with a supposed $1 billion purchase of hip blogging platform Tumblr, but it may be a?moot point if Tumblr’s users fail to stick around post-sale. Microsoft and Facebook may be trying to make a move ahead of Yahoo, Tumblr may be?inching ever closer to running out of cash, and (despite that) may not be afraid to play a little hardball. But here’s something you’re not hearing much about: Tumblr’s users are almost universally unhappy with the news that the site might get sold to Yahoo. And they may let their fingers do the talking, and the walking. Do a search on Tumblr for “yahoo” and you get a stream of distress, interspersed with the occasional bit of helpless resignation, and some calls for activism. The voices of reluctant?acceptance?(usually because of the aforementioned cash situation)?or anything like positivity are few and far between. No outright enthusiasm. (Daddy!)?See for yourself. It’s a problem that extends to some of Tumblr’s oldest users. “If Tumblr goes to Yahoo, I will seriously consider moving my personal blog to Medium, if that’s possible,” Alexia, co-editor over here at TC, told me. She’s had a blog on Tumblr since June 2009, and, while not part of that coveted?18-24 age bracket, is a significant representative of that other cadre of important users: digital influencers. “I don’t know exactly why, but my Tumblr is a part of my identity. And for whatever reason, I don’t want to identify with Yahoo.” Some have tried to start a petition, with a goal of 5 million signatures although others are cynical about whether this will actually have any effect. User attrition is not something to be dismissed, especially when it appears to be underpinned by wider usage trends on the site. When I wrote a post in January about what might come next for Tumblr as a business (it focused on how it could make money; not how it might need to get sold because it doesn’t), I noted that in the prior month, December 2012, it had?167 million visitors and nearly 18 billion pageviews worldwide (Quantcast figures). The trend over the last six months are down, however: in the U.S. page views are down 21% to 5.3 billion, and uniques down 5% to 76 million. Worldwide the picture is better but still not growing: pageviews are down

Who Said Search Engine Optimization Isn?t Easy? Try These Tips For The Best Results

All sites can benefit from the ascending traffic that SEO produces, but it?s important that you do not dehumanize consumers in an attempt for higher profits. This article has some great tips to help you better your site?s visibility by applying techniques that work for you and search engines.

Maine Coon

TIP! Keyword density is important when optimizing an internet page for various search engines. To avoid this, try to keep your total keyword content to under twenty percent of any given page.

To make your site more noticeable you should use a lot of keywords; even ones that are misspelled in the meta tag area. The larger the variety in your meta-tags the more likely it is that your website will be ranked high in a given search. For example, if you have a website about Maine Coon cats, then use ?Maine Coon? as well as ?Main Coon? and ?Mainecoon.?

To make the most out of search engine optimization efforts, write to match your goal. This means that keywords should be repeated as often as you can without making the flow of the writing stilted. When search engines can find and evaluate your keywords, you should see your rankings improve.

TIP! Consider pay-per-click arrangements as a means to lucrative affiliate marketing. Although this is the cheapest and easiest service affiliates can provide and the pay is modest, it can add up fast.

Boosting your site?s SEO takes time, so remember to be patient. Significant changes cannot happen over night. You may have to invest a few months into the process before you start to see big results. As in a business you would run on offline, your reputation will take time to build.

One of the first questions to ask is how many years of experience they have in SEO. Be sure you are aware of any risks, so that you are in a position to make a knowledgeable determination based on the facts.

TIP! Purchase a simple domain name that is pertinent to your niche and easy to remember. These are great for your viewers that locate your content through YouTube.

This is easily done through a robots. txt file and having it placed in the root directory. This makes certain files found on your website inaccessible to the search engine.

Try to avoid using a lot of symbols like underscores in a URL. Certain language can confuse a search engine, which is why each URL should have a meaningful name, as well as pertinent keywords.

TIP! To hide something, create a robots. txt file and adding it to your root directory.

Using a product feed will give your business a more visible presence and help draw more potential customers to your website. Feeds like this detail your services and products with images, descriptions and prices. Present these to search engines as well as to websites that list comparison shopping. A feed reader allows customers to subscribe easily to your feed, too.

Site Map

TIP! Spiders do not recognize session id names or dynamic language, so make sure you?re aware of this as you create URL?s for your different web pages. Therefore, you should come up with a relevant name for each URL.

Adding a site map to your website is a highly important search engine optimization step. Site maps make it significantly easier for search engine crawlers and spiders to access every webpage on your website. The larger the site, the more maps it needs. There should be a maximum of 100 links at most on every site map.

Website owners often overlook the important task of proofreading. Make certain that your site is easy to read for both human visitors and search engines. If your content is poorly written and is full of spelling and grammatical errors, your website will not rank well by search engines, if at all.

TIP! Become an expert in your field. This is a great Internet tool.

The way you optimize your own business for your customers is the same logic you should use in optimizing it for search engines. This fact gets overlooked by more than a few companies.

Use plurals and longer forms of words for keywords to create more hits on a search engine. Keyword stemming is utilized by many search engines. For example, if you use ?accountant? as your keyword, then any searches for ?accountants? or ?accounting? may not have your site listed in the results. Use the keyword stemming technique by choosing longer form keywords; for example, using ?accounting? can also grab readers who were searching for ?accountant.?

TIP! While proofreading is often overlooked, it?s vital to the quality and respectability of all websites. Dedicate resources to making your site readable, both to search engines and to visitors.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of someone searching for your site, and then choose keywords based on which terms they would use. While you want to make those keywords present in your titles and in the content of your articles, you need to take caution. Using the same keyword too often can flag your site as spam, and that will really hurt your rankings.

Business Bureau

TIP! Generate a keyword-oriented site map for added SEO optimization. A site map basically shows all the areas available to viewers on your websites, and provides an easy access point to find what they are looking for.

To improve your search engine optimization efforts, think about becoming a member of the BBB (Better Business Bureau), as well as the Chamber of Commerce in your area. These sites typically will have a link to your website, and this can help if someone does a local search. You also get the added benefit of trust and legitimacy by maintaining a good rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Try basing your articles on keywords to help improve SEO of your articles. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. Good keywords help make your articles more visible. Be sure to include the keyword in the article?s title and summary. You should also use it a few times in the body of the article.

TIP! It is essential to regularly add new content and publish fresh articles. Set a goal of how many stories you will publish per day or per week, and commit to it.

Social media sites are a valuable tool in search engine optimization. You can interact directly with clients through Facebook and Twitter, while YouTube makes it easy to promote products through instructional videos.

If you are on a shared server, ensure that no banned sites are on your proxy. If not, you may appear as a spammer which can hurt your ratings and traffic.

TIP! Link to high-quality content on other sites to improve your search engine rankings. Choice linking is an extremely significant part of SEO.

Used domain names may already have a reputation you can trade on. If you have a domain name that has been around a while (at least for two years), it will be given more attention by the search engines. Look for domains that were dropped recently and determine if any of them is a fit for your site.

There are both good and bad techniques. These tips should have provided you with ways to boost your traffic and how to be able to avoid search engine blocks.

TIP! If you want to improve your search engine ranking, writing unique, interesting content should be your number one priority. To attract traffic, you need to provide information that is different from that on other sites and other Web pages.
