China firm to acquire major African iron ore mine

BEIJING (AP) ? A privately owned Chinese company is finalizing the acquisition of an Australian mining firm that controls a major iron ore mine in west Africa, a move that would give China a stronger role in setting global iron ore prices, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday.

Xinhua, citing officials from Hanlong Group, said Hanlong plans to complete the acquisition of Sundance Resources Ltd. for 45 Australian cents (50 cents) per share by March 1, after submitting paperwork to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

Calls to Hanlong's headquarters in southwestern China's Sichuan province went unanswered Saturday.

Sundance controls the Mbalam iron ore mine, which straddles Cameroon and the Republic of Congo.

Hanlong is seeking a partnership with Chinese state-owned companies and investing $5 billion to develop the Mbalam project and to build a 550-kilometer (340-mile) railway and a shipping port, Xinhua said. Operations are expected to begin in 2014, it said.

As the world's second-largest economy, China is eager to acquire overseas assets and resources to feed its rapid growth.

Critics: Myriad blocks cancer answers by impeding data sharing ...

Patents ? Utah company says it has aided, not hindered, research, care.

Tory Galloway thought her negative result on a widely-used test sold by Utah-based Myriad Genetics Inc. cleared her DNA as a cause for her fallopian tube cancer.

She happily advised her four sisters that the disease didn?t result from a family trait. The relief from the December 2010 test, though, was short lived. In October, after getting results from a broader scan at the University of Washington that included dozens of genes, she learned the truth: Her cancer was caused by a mutation that wasn?t included in the Myriad product.

"It makes me nuts to even think about it," said Galloway, a landscape designer in Indianola, Wash.

The broader test, created by University of Washington researchers, uses technology to identify as many cancer risks as possible. There?s one problem: Such a test can?t include the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that are the most common inherited causes for breast and ovarian cancer because Myriad owns the patents on them. This prevents other U.S. laboratories from using them in a commercial test.

In the mid-1990s, Myriad helped kick-start the gene-testing revolution by pinpointing the two BRCA genes. Now, the world?s biggest genetic testing company for breast cancer, with a market value of $2.2 billion, is under attack by researchers, genetic counselors, doctors, and their patients.

Besides stifling competitors from offering combination tests, including the BRCA genes, critics also said the company won?t share data from decades of testing that could aid research into how best to interpret screening. They said Myriad doesn?t adequately respond when other researchers find added BRCA mutations that address risks their current tests don?t cover.

"What is at stake is the way we want our health-care system to work," said Robert Cook-Deegan, a professor of public policy, biology, and medicine at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, who supports limits on gene patents. "The testing has been set up by Myriad to optimize this business model. It is not set up to optimize public health outcomes."

The dispute, which has grown in intensity as more and more cancer-causing mutations are found, has spilled out of the laboratories and clinics into the U.S. Supreme Court. A ruling next year in a case challenging Myriad?s hold on the BRCA patents could either support the company?s profit-driven motives or redefine a nascent industry in a way that affects millions of dollars in revenue.

Myriad officials reject the criticisms, saying they offer faster, more accurate testing for harmful mutations in breast cancer genes than any other laboratory in the world, and that its patents haven?t hindered research or patient care.

"Myriad has never done anything to harm patients," CEO Peter Meldrum said during an interview at his company?s headquarters in Salt Lake City. "We have the most accurate results, we give the fastest results." There has never been a reported case in which Myriad wrongly told that a woman she had a cancer-causing mutation, he said.

story continues below

Carol Mackoff, 70, a Chicago-based managing director for Rice Financial Products Co., says Myriad "saved my life."

Mackoff tested positive on a Myriad test for a BRCA1 mutation in 2002 after visiting an ovarian cancer prevention program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, she said in a telephone interview. Within weeks, she had her ovaries removed to prevent ovarian cancer, and later in 2009 had a prophylactic double mastectomy.

Without the Myriad test, "I would have had cancer," she said. "The fact that they developed these tests and gave me a tool to work with to allow me to prevent getting cancer, I owe them everything."

Faster, cheaper DNA testing is revolutionizing medical care. Nowhere has the impact been felt more strongly than in breast cancer. A woman who tests positive using Myriad?s tests carries as much as an 80 percent chance that she will get breast cancer in her lifetime. Testing helps women take charge of their medical future, providing options that can include preventative surgery and more extensive monitoring.

Widespread use of the tests has made Myriad an unabashed financial success. The company?s testing business, led by its flagship $3,340 BRCA product, carries an 87 percent gross profit margin that in fiscal 2012 generated $496 million in sales, according to Myriad.

That?s helped boost the company?s shares 30 percent this year.

Netflix CEO gets pay bump after 2012 cut

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings' pay will double to $4 million next year, after he took a pay cut due to management missteps this year.

Hastings' annual salary will rise to $2 million in 2013 and he will get $2 million in stock options, according to a securities filing Friday.

That's up from a salary of $500,000 and $1.5 million in stock options for 2012.

Hastings' total pay for 2012 was down 43 percent from $3.5 million in 2011, when some controversial decisions, including a steep price hike on subscriptions, sent the stock spiraling. It fell from a high above $300 to a low below $70 per share.

This year, shares are up 29 percent, closing Friday at $89.33. Recovering from the missteps, the company expects to add around 5 million U.S. subscribers, to between 26.4 million and 27.1 million by the end of the year.

AP sources: Saints, Payton, agree to terms on deal

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The New Orleans Saints and suspended coach Sean Payton will indeed be together again next season as the bounty scandal fades into history and the bid to win a second Super Bowl resumes.

Payton has agreed in principle to a multiyear contract extension, according to two people familiar with the deal.

The people told The Associated Press about the deal Friday night on condition of anonymity because it hasn't been signed and final details regarding the length of the contract and financial compensation are still being worked out.

"Very happy it is official," Brees said in an email to the AP. "Never had any doubts."

Payton was due to begin his seventh season as the Saints' head coach in 2012 before being suspended for the whole season by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in connection with the NFL's bounty investigation.

Payton signed an extension in 2011 that would have kept him in New Orleans through 2015, but Goodell objected to certain language in that deal, leaving Payton's future uncertain until the deal was reached Friday. The language in question in the previous extension gave Payton the right to opt out early if general manager Mickey Loomis left the club for any reason.

The new agreement, which was first reported by Fox Sports, also must be approved by the NFL.

Payton is the only coach in Saints history to win a Super Bowl, a title earned at the end of the 2009 season. But his legacy was tarnished by the NFL's bounty probe, as Goodell ruled that Payton failed to exert proper institutional control over a cash-for-hits bounty program run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams from 2009-2011.

Although the Saints objected to the characterization of what coaches and players have said was nothing more than a performance pool for big plays, Goodell suspended Payton for the entire season. The commissioner also suspended Loomis for half of the season and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games.

Payton is 62-34 as in regular-season games as Saints head coach and 5-3 in the postseason. During the three seasons before his suspension, the Saints won 41 regular-season and playoff games combined, more than any other team in the NFL.

Payton has primarily handled the offense in New Orleans, teaming up with Brees to break numerous NFL and club records. The single-season NFL records set by the Saints in 2011 included yards passing by a team (5,505) and a quarterback (5,476). The Saints also set a record for total offensive yards with 7,474.

Although speculation ran rampant that Payton could essentially become a free agent after this season and end up elsewhere, Brees repeatedly said he would be "shocked" if Payton ended up anywhere but New Orleans next season. Brees is under contract with the Saints through the 2016 season, and Payton was the driving force in the Saints' effort to acquire Brees as a free agent in 2006.

Without Payton on the sideline this season, the Saints missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Brees remained prolific, but his 18 interceptions also tied for a league high heading into the final weekend of the season.

The Saints headed into Sunday's season finale against Carolina at 7-8, hoping to avoid their first losing season since they went 7-9 in 2007.

Payton is expected to return to the Saints immediately after the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, unless Goodell allows him to return earlier.

When Payton reports back to work, it will offically close the book on the bounty saga that has overshadowed the Saints' organization since the NFL first announced on March 2 that it found the Saints ran a program that paid improper cash bonuses for hits that injured opponents.

In addition to the suspensions of Payton, Loomis and Vitt, the Saints also were docked second-round draft choices in 2012 and 2013, though Goodell has said he could potentially restores the Saints' 2013 second-round choice and dock the team a later-round pick.

Meanwhile, four current or former Saints were initially given suspensions of varying lengths. Two current Saints defensive captains, linebacker Jon Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, were among those suspended. Vilma was banned for the whole season and Smith for four games, but the players successfully challenged their punishment with the help of the NFL Players Association and never served a game.

Former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who was appointed by Goodell to oversee the players' appeals, ruled that the NFL probe was accurate in its findings that the Saints ran and improper program and attempted to cover it up, but that the evidence was not strong enough to warrant unprecedented suspensions for players who had been only fined for similar behavior in the past.

Five great video games to get your New Year's Eve party started

6 hrs.

The New Year's Eve long?weekend is upon us, and you know what that means???good friends and?good times ahead.?If you're looking to add?that special something to the party,?then may we suggest you fire up some?video games?

Yes, video games. A great multiplayer game has a way of adding extra life???and extra fun???to a group?gather.?Below we take a look at five video?games guaranteed to get your party started ... and then keep it going well past midnight. (Champagne not included.)

"Dance Central 3"?- Xbox 360 (Kinect required)
While the "Dance Central" games are pitched as a great way to learn some dance moves and maybe even get some exercise in the process, I've found them, more than anything, to be?a great way to get an entire room of people laughing. At each other. At themselves. And probably at you.?And I mean this?in a good way.

As with the first two Dance Central games, "Dance Central 3" uses?the Xbox?Kinect motion sensor to?read the movements of your entire body as you try to follow choreographed dance routines performed by a colorful array of characters on the screen. And?while you can play this game solo, the real fun comes in playing with others as you?pit your dance skills (or the total and complete?lack thereof) against those?of your friends.

"Dance Central 3" takes players history-hopping through 40 years of dance crazes?and?the music that went with them. So whether you like to?do some '70s style?disco to the Trammps,?get your '80s?boy band boogie?on to New Kids on the Block or go "Gangnam Style" with Psy here in?modern times, there is something for?everyone at the party. Meanwhile, the developers at Harmonix noticed just how popular this game is at parties and have added two new party-specific modes:?Party Time and Crew Throwdown, the latter of which pits?two teams of up to?four players against each other in a competition to see who has the "best crew."

Grab a drink, grab your friends,?turn up the volume and get ready to dance ... and mock each other.

Sing Party - Wii U
Who needs a karaoke bar when you can bring the karaoke right into your home ... and make a competitive party?game of it at the same time. "Sing Party" for Nintendo's new Wii U game machine?comes packaged with a microphone and,?in karaoke style, presents players with a variety of songs new and old to belt out.

You've got tunes from?Rihanna, Jackson 5, Lady Gaga,?The Wanted and?James Brown among others.?The Wii U's new tablet-style GamePad controller lets the singer read the lyrics right there in front of them and also lets you act as a kind of DJ, lining up tunes to keep the party jumping ...?er?... singing.

For this weekend's gathering, be sure to check out?the?Team Mode, which has the crowd splitting into two groups who then try to top each other's vocal skillz. There's also?Party Mode which has one person act like a lead singer while?the rest of the room performs back-up vocals and dance routines. Of course, if you sing like I do (and by "sing," I mean "squawk") then you may need a beverage or three?before you start.

"New Super Mario Bros. U"?- Wii U
This much we know: Nintendo knows how to make a great family-friendly game. And nothing is more family friendly???and I mean friendly to the entire family???than "New Super Mario Bros. U."

The game features the clever, colorful platforming fun that Super Mario games are famous for. But this time around, it adds the Wii U's new?tablet controller into the mix. And the?addition?of this gadget???called the GamePad???really accentuates the group fun.

I tested this game out on my own family over the Christmas holiday?and had three generations playing happily together. My 5-year-old son and I used the standard Wii Remote controllers to take Mario and Luigi through their paces,?maneuvering?them?through levels, collecting coins and fighting goombas as one would expect.?Meanwhile,?I handed my 67-year-old mother the GamePad and tasked her with assisting us. When you have the GamePad, you simply?tap on the touchscreen to drop platforms?helpfully into position for the other players?to jump on; or you tap on enemies to keep them from harming your pals. With the GamePad in hand, even the most casual player can join the fun in a low-stress way.

"New Super Mario Bros. U" supports a total of five players (four using the standard controllers?and one using the GamePad to assist) and is a great way to get people?of all skill levels playing together.

Sonic &?All-Stars Racing Transformed?- PlayStation 3,?Xbox 360,?Wii U
This zany, fast-paced kart racing game is just the thing to add a bit of zip into any?gathering. You and your friends and family?members can burn rubber together???and?pit your (virtual) driving skills against each other???in the game's?four-player split-screen mode (the Wii U version supports up to five players).

You'll start by?picking from a variety of favorite Sega?gaming mascots???there's?Sonic the Hedgehog (of course) as well as?new gaming hero?Wreck-It Ralph, from the Disney movie. You'll then?compete across a variety of wildly inventive?race tracks?that will have you speeding along not only on the ground, but in the air and on the water. That's because the "transformed" in the title refers to your race cars???which transform?from cars to boats to planes mid-race.

PlayStation All Stars?Battle Royale?-?PlayStation 3
If you want to spike your gathering?with a?competitive spirit (and maybe a bit of good-natured trash talk) then fire up this multiplayer?fighting game.

With characters and settings plucked from your?favorite PlayStation titles, this brawler featuring the likes of Kratos from "God of War," Nathan Drake from "Uncharted" and Sackboy from "LittleBigPlanet" allows up to four players to duke it out in frantic, over-the-top style. Yep, nothing brings friends together like?pummeling?each other with high-flying, eye-popping?Super Attacks.

Winda Benedetti?writes about video?games for NBC?News. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you can?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.

Five questions that will be answered by UFC 155

The UFC's end-of-the-year cards are usually stacked. Despite injuries, UFC 155 is no different. It features intriguing bouts that will answer some burning questions.

Did a knee injury hold back Cain Velasquez the first time he fought Junior dos Santos? When the two first met up last November, Velasquez reportedly had a badly injured knee. He was knocked out in 64 seconds. This time a (seemingly) healthy Velasquez will get to show if he deserves the heavyweight belt.

Has Chris Leben returned to form, for really real this time? Since Leben was on the original "Ultimate Fighter," he has been a man who wrestled with his demons. Most recently, those demons took the form of a banned pain killer which resulted in a one-year suspension from the UFC. Against Derek Brunson, Leben can show he's again the man who knocked out Wanderlei Silva.

Can Tim Boetsch be the next guy to challenge Anderson Silva? Though his original bout with Chris Weidman was called off because of an injury to Weidman, Boetsch still has another opportunity to show he can beat up opponents. He wants a chance to beat up Silva,* and this bout with Costa Phillippou is an opportunity for Boetsch's fighting to shine.

Or should Alan Belcher be the man to take on Silva? It's been more than three years since Belcher lost a fight. His last four fights have been stoppage wins. An impressive win over Yushin Okami could put him in line to fight for the middleweight belt.*

Is Todd Duffee still the knockout artist who once graced the octagon? Back in 2009, Duffee knocked out Tim Hague in a mere seven seconds. After that, the hype train was running behind him full steam. It was derailed when Mike Russow came back to knock Duffee out in the third round of their bout. Duffee was cut from the UFC, and is getting another shot at the octagon on Saturday. He'll fight Philip De Fries on the Facebook preliminaries, and get a chance to show if he can still knock people out very quickly.

*Assuming the next middleweight belt is based on competitiveness and earning a title shot by fighting, not by calling opponents out. Considering what has happened recently in the UFC welterweight and light heavyweight divisions, there are no guarantees.
