Integrative Medicine: Work stress increases heart-attack risk | Health ...

Two interesting studies have come up over the past month on heart attacks. Scientists have found a temporary condition that can quadruple your chance of having a heart attack. Scientists have found that job stress leads to more heart attacks, but there is a treatment that can reduce job stress-related heart attacks by 50 percent.

Curious? The first study involved almost 4,000 patients, and was conducted at Harvard, with results published in the American Journal of Cardiology. The surprising condition that could lead to a quadrupling of heart attacks was anger. The researchers collected data from patients who were part of a study between 1989 and 1996 to determine what brought on their heart attacks.

A total of 1,484 participants reported having outbursts of anger in the previous year, 110 of whom had those episodes within two hours of the onset of their heart attacks. The researchers found that with each increment of anger intensity, the risk of heart attack in the next two hours rose.

That risk was 1.7 times greater after feeling "moderately angry, so hassled it shows in your voice"; and 2.3 times greater after feeling "very tense, body tense, clenching fists or teeth" and 4.5 times greater after feeling "enraged! lost control, throwing objects, hurting yourself or others."

Why does anger increase heart attacks? Anger induces a fight-or-flight response in the body, releasing chemicals epinephrine and norepinephrine that raise blood pressure, raise our heart rate, constrict blood vessels and promote stickiness in platelets. All these are not good for the cardiovascular system and can lead to a heart attack.

The second study looked at job stress and heart attacks, and found that the magical cure with a 50 percent success in reducing heart attacks from job stress was a healthy lifestyle. The study was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. In this study, researchers studied 102,000 men and women, ages 17 to 70, in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Sweden and Finland. Over 10 years, the rate of coronary artery disease was 18.4 per 1,000 for people with job stress and 14.7 per 1,000 for those without job stress

The lifestyles measured were smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, inactivity and obesity. Those with a healthy lifestyle had no risk factors, while people with a moderately unhealthy lifestyle had one risk factor. Two or more risk factors was an unhealthy lifestyle.

What is fascinating is the extraordinary impact of lifestyle on the reduction of heart-attack risk with job stress: When lifestyle and work were factored together, the heart disease rate was 31.2 per 1,000 for people with job stress and an unhealthy lifestyle and decreased to 15 per 1,000 for those with job stress and a healthy lifestyle.

Take-home points? Anger is dangerous for the heart, and escalating expressions of anger - far from being cathartic - appear to hurt the body. And if you are at risk for heart disease and have job stress, you can decrease that risk by changing your lifestyle. Both of these studies help quantify the benefits of a holistic approach to your health - in addition to seeing your doctor, do focus on mind/ body/spirit wellness.

China's migrant worker pay growth nearly halved in 2012

BEIJING (Reuters) - The annual increase in pay for China's 163 million migrant workers almost halved in 2012, an official survey showed on Monday, signaling a looser labor market as economic growth slows.

The average monthly wage of migrant workers grew 11.8 percent in 2012 from the previous year to 2,290 yuan ($370). That marked a sharp slowdown from the annual 21.2 percent surge in 2011, according to the latest survey by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The survey of China's rural labor force showed the number of migrants working outside their home towns grew 3 percent in 2012 from the previous year to 163.4 million. The pace eased from 3.4 percent in 2011.

The survey reinforced signs that China's export-oriented coastal provinces face growing competition from their inland counterparts as more migrants seek and find jobs closer to home.

The number of migrants working in their home provinces rose 3.6 percent in 2012 from the previous year, outpacing the 2.3 percent rise in the number of people working outside their home provinces.

The number of migrant workers in the Pearl River delta region facing Hong Kong - a major hub for exports - accounted for 19.8 percent of the total, down by 0.3 percentage points from the previous year.

The number of migrant workers in the Yangtze River delta area around Shanghai accounted for 22.6 percent of the national total last year, down 0.5 percentage points from 2011.

Provincial officials in the interior have rolled out the red carpet for foreign companies trying to escape higher costs in the more developed coastal areas.

Foxconn Technology Group, the world's largest contract electronics maker, has moved its main operations to such inland provinces as Henan and Shanxi.

China's overall rural workforce rose 3.9 percent in 2012 from the previous year to 262.6 million, the survey showed. The rate of expansion was 4.4 percent in 2011.

The bureau said the survey was conducted on a nationwide basis covering 200,000 migrant workers who had taken non-farm jobs for more than six months.

A seemingly endless stream of rural workers migrating to cities in search of better jobs and lives has underpinned China's economic rise in the past three decades.

But the pool of cheap labor is steadily drying up as the population ages, pushing up wages, which bodes well for the country's economic transformation.

The survey showed that the proportion of rural workers aged under 40 fell to 59.3 percent in 2012 from 70 percent in 2008.

Chinese leaders are planning to gradually free up China's rigid residence registration, or hukou, system to allow migrant workers to enjoy basic welfare services outside their official place of residence.

The reform will help speed up urbanization, seen as a vital driver to underpin economic growth, which slowed to a 13-year low of 7.8 percent in 2012.

Only 14.3 percent of migrant workers had pensions in 2012 and 16.9 percent had medical insurance, according to the survey. ($1 = 6.1316 yuan)

Amazon workers in Germany stage strike

BERLIN (AP) ? Amazon's German workers are staging a short-term strike in a push for higher wages.

The ver.di union said Monday employees in Leipzig are walking off the job in a one-day warning strike.

The union is pushing the online retailer to adopt wage agreements similar to those governing retail and mail-order workers, which include Christmas bonuses and extra pay for working nights, Sundays and holidays. The agreements could mean as much as 9,000 euros ($11,700) more annually for Amazon workers.

Amazon says its distribution warehouses in Germany are logistics centers, and employees are already paid on the upper end of what workers in that industry earn.

Ver.di represents some 2,000 workers in Leipzig and 3,300 employees at Amazon's Bad Hersfeld center. They staged a first strike earlier this month.

Peering across the baseball diamond at Spring Mobile Ballpark, Salt Lake Bees manager Keith Johnson spotted one of his former players ? someone who hadn?t heard the news yet.

"That?s my boy over there," he said to the player while gesturing toward the dugout. "He?s grown a few inches since you last saw him, hasn?t he?"

In the dugout, a dark-skinned teenager tilted his head down with a slightly abashed smile that belied his thick, strong frame.

"He?s going to play football," Johnson said. "He?s going to Arizona State!"

By now, Korey Rush has gotten used to his stepdad?s gushing. Although the 17-year-old East High star is taller than a number of the Bees, he?s known them since he was a junior high runt who liked to carry a football wherever he went, one who tagged along with Keith.

"Keith" is what Korey calls his stepfather. Korey?s dad lives in Missouri, and they talk often, and they?ve spent summers together over the years.

But since entering Korey?s life 10 years ago, Johnson has assumed the responsibility of helping raise a boy into a man.

Johnson develops young talent for a living as a minor league manager, getting prospects ready for the big leagues. But with Korey, one of the top football prospects in Utah, the struggles and successes are different, more personal.

That?s why he often calls Korey "son."

"When you?re in someone?s life that much, you?re going to take on a role," he said. "We don?t always agree, but everything that?s done or said, it comes from a place of love. That?s where we are, that?s where we?ve almost always been."

What brought them together was Korey?s mother, Malena, the woman both men call the family?s "backbone."

Johnson fell for her in 2003, as he was wrapping up his pro baseball career with the Salt Lake Stingers. Korey wondered why the third baseman kept tossing balls up into the stands where his mom was sitting.

It wasn?t a lingering mystery. The two started dating, and Johnson began showing up at family events. He got to know Korey, a sometimes goofy, often sweet boy who had been alone with his mom for a while.

Korey was protective of his mother, but slowly opened up to Johnson through sports. They bonded, playing baseball on a diamond in Korey?s backyard.

"I knew I could trust him early on," Korey said. "I think that?s what made it so easy, I thought he was cool."

But Korey?s first love was football. He played on youth teams in Park City, and he dominated with uncommon size and athleticism. It didn?t take a scout?s eye to know that he had big things in his future. If he kept growing and crashing through opponents like he did, he could be a great player.

Johnson had grown up the youngest of four brothers, and had spent his youth trying to prove he could play baseball and football just as well as they did. He didn?t see the same drive from his stepson when he took the football field.

Most of Keith and Korey?s sparring sessions revolved around Korey?s work ethic ? or lack thereof.

"I don?t want to say it was easy, but it was easy," Korey said. "I didn?t see past second grade football. I thought that was the world. I didn?t understand work ethic or why I needed to try hard."

That changed when the family moved to Salt Lake City and Korey began his freshman year at East. There were older defensive linemen who were bigger and better than him. Coaches were pointing out his mistakes in film sessions. For the first time in football, he was getting negative feedback.

He didn?t tell his parents how he was hurting from the criticism. Johnson, unaware that Korey was losing passion for the game, kept giving Korey his own advice, adding to the pressure.
