Study shows voting higher among youth using social media to express beliefs

Young adults who are interested in politics are more likely than others to participate in public affairs by speaking out about their political beliefs using Facebook, online blogs and other social media, according to a study performed by researchers from the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University.

Co-authored by Bruce Pinkleton, a communications professor at WSU, and Yushu Zhou, a former WSU graduate student who is now a doctoral candidate at Stanford University, the study is scheduled for publication in the November issue of the journal, Mass Communication and Society. It is based on an analysis of the political involvement and online interactions of more than 400 undergraduate college students.

Pinkleton and Zhou found that participants who were interested in election information were more likely to use social media, public affairs websites and other digital information sources to learn about the elections and were more likely to participate in public affairs by expressing their opinions online. Prior research has shown that the more informed a citizen is, the more likely they are to participate in elections. They also found that participants using traditional news sources, government sources, and candidate websites had higher levels of political efficacy, or the belief that their participation matters.

"In 2012, candidates have more channels to keep in touch with voters, such as Facebook, Twitter, and even Linkedin where presidential candidates have created their own profiles," said Zhou. "These new communication channels not only provide richer political information and interactive messages for voters, especially young voters, but also reshape the relationships between candidates and voters."

Current presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney offer political websites and social networking sites in order to promote their campaigns. Both candidates use not only social media, such as Facebook, but have also developed Tumblr, Spotify, and Flickr accounts. These are all websites that enable political engagement, and are typically used by young adults. The findings of the study are expected to become particularly significant as candidates continue to branch out into other new forms of media.

"When young people are motivated, even blogs and social media can be important sources of information and contribute to their political participation," said Pinkleton. "Given the historically low levels of political participation among young people, this is an important finding. The more we can get people involved in the political process, the more likely we are to enjoy the benefits of a strong, healthy democracy."

ABSTRACT

This paper concentrates on the creation of the ?alternative? learning space from the free university movement. The rationale is to question if the ?alternative? offers a legitimate concept that can supplement formal modes of learning focusing on four case studies, The Alternative Art College, the Copenhagen Free University, Manoa Free University and the Social Science Centre Lincoln. It will discuss if the spaces in the free university movement can function autonomously, with definitions from Castoriadis and Adorno. To balance the placement of the ?alternative? in the world, it will be compared with the current UK HE sector and gallery and museum education. From this it will also discuss how the institution(s) (HE university, gallery and museums) function through writings from Gerard Raunig and Eilean Hooper ?Greenhill. Alongside this the essay will reference Jacques Ranci?re and Paulo Freire? for their interpretations of pedagogical practices. There will also be an element of practice based research due to the inclusion of my own art practice, the AAC. Finally this essay is not aiming to create a blueprint for a future HE sector but will argue the legitimacy of informal learning put forward by the free university movement.

Wall Street scrambles to raise cash after Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street firms and U.S. banks scrambled to raise cash on Wednesday, as U.S. financial markets resumed normal trading after a devastating storm pummeled the U.S. East Coast and closed major markets for two days.

Major banks and investment houses rely on the money markets - a key cash source for financial markets - to finance trading positions and loans that they make. Companies sell commercial paper and other short-term loans to money market funds and other investors fund their inventories and payrolls.

The massive storm, Sandy, disrupted these markets, thinned trading and drove up borrowing costs on Monday and Tuesday.

But overnight borrowing costs in funding markets have since receded from those levels, which were last seen during the height of the global credit crunch in late 2008.

Investors charged a borrower 0.35 to 0.40 percent for an overnight loan in the repurchase agreement (repo) market early Wednesday, analysts and traders said.

This was sharply lower than the 1.25 percent heard quoted late on Monday before Sandy made landfall in the U.S. Northeast. The storm knocked out power for about 8 million people and flooded the New York subways.

Traders at banks and other institutions rushed to raise money Monday and Tuesday to insure their trades were funded at least through Wednesday, when they had expected the stock and bond markets to reopen.

"It's not as bad as it could have been, but people are still operating with skeletal staffs," said Mike Lin, director of U.S. funding with TD Securities in New York.

On Friday, the overnight repo rate ended at 0.20 percent.

SENDAI, Japan (AP) ? About a quarter of the $148 billion budget for reconstruction after the March 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster has been spent on unrelated projects, including subsidies for a contact lens factory and research whaling, a Japanese government accounting shows.

The audit documents released last week buttressed complaints over shortcomings in the reconstruction effort. More than half the 11.7 trillion yen ($148 billion) budget is yet to be disbursed, stalled by indecision and bureaucracy, while nearly all of the 340,000 people evacuated from the disaster zone remain uncertain whether, when and how they will ever resettle.

Many of the non-reconstruction-related projects loaded into the budget were included on the pretext they might contribute to Japan's economic revival, a strategy that the government now acknowledges was a mistake.

"It is true that the government has not done enough and has not done it adequately. We must listen to those who say the reconstruction should be the first priority," Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said in a speech to parliament on Monday.

He vowed that unrelated projects will be "strictly wrung out" of the budget.

But ensuring that funds go to their intended purpose might require an explicit change in the reconstruction spending law, which authorizes spending on such ambiguous purposes as creating eco-towns and supporting "employment measures."

Among the unrelated projects benefiting from the reconstruction budgets are: road building in distant Okinawa; prison vocational training in other parts of Japan; subsidies for a contact lens factory in central Japan; renovations of government offices in Tokyo; aircraft and fighter pilot training, research and production of rare earths minerals, a semiconductor research project and even funding to support whaling, ostensibly for research.

Some 30 million yen ($380,000) went to promoting the Tokyo Sky Tree, a transmission tower that is the world's tallest freestanding broadcast structure. Another 2.8 billion yen ($35 million) was requested by the Justice Ministry for a publicity campaign to "reassure the public" about the risks of big disasters.

Masahiro Matsumura, a politics professor at St. Andrews University in Osaka, Japan, said justifying such misuse by suggesting the benefits would "trickle down" to the disaster zone is typical of the political dysfunction that has hindered Japan's efforts to break out of two decades of debilitating economic slump.

"This is a manifestation of government indifference to rehabilitation. They are very good at making excuses," Matsumura told The Associated Press.

Near the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant, which suffered the additional blow from the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, recovery work has barely begun.

More than 325,000 of the 340,000 people evacuated from the disaster zone or forced to flee the areas around the nuclear plant after the March 11, 2011 disaster remain homeless or away from their homes, according to the most recent figures available.

In Rikuzentakata, a fishing enclave where 1,800 people were killed or went missing as the tsunami scoured the harbor, rebuilding has yet to begin in earnest, says Takashi Kubota, who left a government job in Tokyo in May 2011 to become the town's deputy mayor.

The tsunami destroyed 3,800 of Rikuzentakata's 9,000 homes. The first priority, he says, has been finding land for rebuilding homes ? on higher ground. For now, most evacuees are housed, generally unhappily, in temporary shelters in school playgrounds and sports fields.

"I can sum it up in two words ? speed and flexibility ? that are lacking," Kubota said. Showing a photo of the now non-existent downtown area, he said, "In 19 months, there have basically been no major changes. There is not one single new building yet."

The government has pledged to spend 23 trillion yen ($295 billion) over this decade on reconstruction and disaster prevention, 19 trillion yen ($245 billion) of it within five years.

But more than half the reconstruction budget remains unspent, according to the government's audit report.

The dithering is preventing the government, whose debt is already twice the size of the country's GDP, from getting the most bang for every buck.

"You've got economic malaise and political as well. That's just a recipe for disaster," said Matthew Circosta, an economist with Moody's Analytics in Sydney.

Part of the problem is the central government's strategy of managing the reconstruction from Tokyo instead of delegating it to provincial governments. At the same time, the local governments lack the staff and expertise for such major rebuilding.

The government "thinks it has to be in the driver's seat," Jun Iio, a government adviser and professor at Tokyo University told a conference in Sendai. "Unfortunately the reconstruction process is long and only if the local residents can agree on a plan will they move ahead on reconstruction."

"It is in this stage that creativity is needed for rebuilding," he said.

Even Sendai, a regional capital of over 1 million people much better equipped than most coastal communities to deal with the disaster, still has mountains of rubble. Much of it is piled amid the bare foundations, barren fields and broken buildings of its oceanside suburb of Arahama.

Sendai quickly restored disrupted power, gas and water supplies and its tsunami-swamped airport. The area's crumbled expressways and heavily damaged railway lines were repaired within weeks.

But farther north and south, ravaged coastal towns remain largely unoccupied.

More than 240 ports remain unbuilt; in many cases their harbors are treacherous with tsunami debris.

Like many working on the disaster, Yoshiaki Kawata of Kansai University worries that the slow progress on reconstruction will leave the region, traditionally one of Japan's poorest, without a viable economy.

"There is almost no one on the streets," he said in the tiny fishing hamlet of Ryoishi, where the sea rose 17 meters (56 feet). "Building a new town will take many years."

Even communities remain divided over how to rebuild. Moving residential areas to higher ground involves cumbersome bureaucratic procedures and complicated ownership issues. Each day of delay, meanwhile, raises the likelihood that residents will leave and that local businesses will fail to recover, says Itsunori Onodera, a lawmaker from the port town of Kesennuma, which lost more than 1,400 people in the disaster.

"Speed," he says, is the thing most needed to get the region back on its feet.

In the Parisian suburb of Le Chesnay, where construction continues amid pending court action to bar the project, the complaints are legion: Missionaries will bother residents, children could be targeted for conversion without parents' knowledge, construction will be disruptive, the edifice will be too large for the town.

But what seems equally on display is unease about a profound decline in Catholic practice, accompanied by a rise ? however small ? in Christian evangelicalism.

?It [the Catholic church] registers the fact ? the word is constantly used in its documents ? that it is today a minority and it has to make do in a society where it only is a minority, but where, as a minority, it also needs to defend its identity,? says Philippe Portier, a professor of political science at the Practical School of High Studies.

Doorbells will ring

For Michelle Carloz, it was worries about missionaries that first came to mind when she heard about the plans to build the temple in Le Chesnay, an affluent and mainly Catholic community of 30,000 about 10 miles west of Paris, near Versailles.

?I told myself, ?Here we go again, it?s going to start again as it was with the Jehovah?s Witnesses,?? says Mrs. Carloz, the secretary of a local group promoting urban development in the residents? interests. Carloz, a practicing Catholic, first heard about the project in 2010. ?We?ve had some coming to our streets all the time, all the time, all the time, ringing doorbells. That was my first reaction.?

Jean-Louis Schlegel, a philosopher and religion sociologist, says such a response is not unusual. French people tend to be wary of Mormon missionaries and tend to confuse them with Jehovah?s Witnesses, he says.

?I am not sure that the average Catholic from Le Chesnay sees the building of a Mormon temple with a favorable eye, even more so given such a big one,? Mr. Schlegel says, referring to the size of the project, which also includes a park, a guest house for those going to the temple, a house for the temple?s president, an information center, housing for the missionaries working in the temple, and an underground parking lot.

Le Chesnay Mayor Philippe Brillault says that local Catholics were intrigued, and perhaps puzzled, by the temple project when it became public last year. ?I would tend to say that, given that the Mormons are called the Church of Jesus Christ, there can be either a perception of confusion, or a perception of competition,? he says.

Starring: Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant

Splashed across time and space ? from 18th century sailing vessels to a futuristic world labouring across the heavens ??Cloud Atlas?is an immensely ambitious thingamajig that doesn?t work as a movie, but is unparalleled in the anti-climax of its message. Science fiction often builds elaborate and imaginative structures to house rather ordinary thoughts, but the animating ethos of?Cloud Atlas?(?we are all connected?) holds a special place in the canon.

That?s not all there is to it, of course. For instance, there is a cannibalism subtext that has a similarly wide-ranging sensibility, and when a book publisher (Jim Broadbent, in one of three roles he has in the film) who has been imprisoned in a fascistic old folks? home, yells, ?Soylent Green is people,? you begin to appreciate the scope, not to mention the influences, of the project.

It?s based on a novel by David Mitchell that was regarded as unfilmable and for good reason, as it turns out. It has been brought to the screen by directors Tom Tykwer (the multi-narrative?Run Lola Run) and the Wachowski siblings (the multi-everything?The Matrix).

There?s that in it as well: the dystopian space-age mindscape, here represented by a futuristic (and derivative) Korea called Neo Seoul where female replicants are used as waitresses and sex toys until one of them is rescued by an underground fighter (Jim Sturgess) who?s a kind of lovestruck Neo, except with unpersuasive makeup designed to make him look vaguely Asian.

Hugo Weaving, the villainous Mr. Smith of?The Matrix?series, plays three roles, including a female nurse, and it seems more than coincidental that another key character is named Mr. Sixsmith, seeing as how there are six narratives here, although not six Smiths.

The stories share actors and themes and, in a couple of cases, birthmarks: a racing comet that marks and joins characters across the eons. Tom Hanks is tied for the busiest with six roles, most memorably a primitive goatherd of the post-apocalyptic future ? ?106 winters after the fall,? the only hint we get about what happened ? named Zachary who speaks in a barely understandable pidgin.

His character is helping Halle Berry, who also has six roles including a space-suited survivor of the future who helps Zachary evade marauding tribes of cannibals, among them Hugh Grant.

He, in turn, is mostly a villain in his half-dozen parts, but even as the evil head of an oil company in 1970s America ? where he?s being investigated by Berry?s roaming reporter ? he can?t resist the self-deprecating knee-bends that once defined his career as the go-to love interest in a series of charming if disposable rom-coms.

Cloud Atlas?is further proof that the more things change, the more they?re typecast.

The best of the stories feature Broadbent, first as a contemporary publisher whose star author (Hanks again) does a very bad thing to a critic ? something that involves a harsh review, a high balcony, and a precipitous fall ? and whose outrage at what happens to him is an ideal expression of the?Cloud Atlas?befuddlement.

Broadbent also appears as a 19th century composer who hires a young amanuensis named Adam (Ben Whishaw) to transcribe his music. Adam ends up writing the?Cloud Atlas?symphony, another of the threads that holds the pieces more or less together.

There are some lovely visual touches across the various universes ofCloud Atlas, but with so much going on, it stays stubbornly unstitched: the stories trip over rather than enrich one another, and just as you start getting interested in one of them ? will the Korean woman named Sonmi-451 (Doona Bae) get away from the storm troopers in Seoul of the future? ? you?re pulled back (or forward) to another fraught tale of slavery and slaughter.

It?s a film that?s mostly defined by its sprawling vision: it?s overstuffed and overlong and it feels as if the producers kept throwing more money at it to make it better, as if it were a government health crisis. Yes, we?re all connected, but that doesn?t mean we all have to be played by Tom Hanks.

Nanny suspected of killing 2 kids in N.Y. home

NEW YORK (AP) ? A nanny suspected of killing two young children she was looking after and then stabbing herself is in critical condition in a city hospital, as authorities continue to investigate a situation that is every parent's nightmare.

The horror started for the children's mother, Marina Krim, when she and a third child returned to their apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side Thursday evening. Puzzled by the darkened home, she returned to the lobby to ask the doorman if the nanny had gone out with 1-year-old Leo, just learning to walk, and 6-year-old Lucia, known as LuLu, lover of "all things princess."

She was told they hadn't left, so she returned upstairs. A search led to the bathroom, where the children's bodies were in the bathtub and the nanny lay wounded nearby. It's unclear how many times the children were stabbed.

"There was some kind of screaming about, 'You slit her throat!'" said music therapist Rima Starr, who lives on the same floor as the family, and said she heard screams coming from their apartment at around 5:30 p.m.

The nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, who was found near a knife, was hospitalized in critical condition and was in police custody. The children were pronounced dead at a hospital.

The children's father, CNBC digital media executive Kevin Krim, who had been away on a business trip, was met by police at the airport on his return and was given an escort to the hospital where his loved ones had gathered.

The couple's apartment building sits in one of the city's most idyllic neighborhoods, a block from Central Park, near the Museum of Natural History and blocks from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The neighborhood is home to many affluent families, and seeing children accompanied by nannies is an everyday part of life there, making the idea of such violence even more disturbing to residents.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said it's unclear how long the nanny had worked for the family and the police investigation was ongoing. No charges had been filed.

Starr, the neighbor, said she believed the nanny had been hired just recently.

"I met her in the elevator, the day before yesterday, and was making small talk," she said.

After police arrived, she said, the mother remained in the building's lobby, screaming hysterically and clutching her surviving child.

On a webpage devoted to a recent family wedding, the eldest of the children, Lulu, is described as loving "art projects, ballet, and all things princess." The youngest, Leo, was said to be just learning how to walk.

The family had moved to New York from San Francisco within the last few years. The children's father was named general manager of CNBC's digital media division in March, after working previously in digital media at Bloomberg. Their mother had a cooking blog and taught art classes to young children.

The family lived in a stately, late 19th-century apartment building where one three-bedroom unit currently available for rent has an asking price of $10,000 per month. They had a greyhound, retired from racing, named Babar.

The human body has long since become a canvas and tattoos and piercings have taken the freedom of expression to even newer levels. With a tattoo festival going on in the city, we look at the some celebrities whose body art is too good to ignore.

David Beckham

In 1999, David Beckham first went under the needle following the birth of his son, Brooklyn. The result was his son?s name in Gothic script. A year later, Beckham was back at the tattoo studio, this time for a giant guardian angel on his upper back. He then pledged his devotion to wife Victoria with a tattoo of her name in Hindi. When his second son Romeo was born, Beckham added his name above the guardian angel ? who by then was sporting some impressive wings. Shortly after Romeo?s addition, the proud papa decided to get the number ?7? tattooed on to his inner arm, written in Roman numerals. Following his transfer to Real Madrid, Beckham had a cross design on the back of his neck. In 2004, a month after allegations of his affair with Rebecca Loos, he had a large angel design on his bicep, with the motto: ?In the Face of A diversity.? When asked about his love for the ink, Beckham said: ?Everybody?s got a way of expressing their feelings, and mine is through my tattoos.?

Anjelina Jolie

She?s got a pout to die for, a body to lust after and now a whole collection of tattoos to admire. It all started with the tattoo of a Chinese dragon which was later topped with ?Billy Bob?, the name of her second husband, actor Billy Bob Thornton. The unfortunate latter was unceremoniously removed. And now that she is enjoying motherhood thoroughly, Jolie found time to ink in the latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates for Nice, France, the birthplace of her and Brad Pitt?s twin babies, Knox and Vivienne. Their birthplaces are located right below the global coordinates for the birthplaces of Maddox, Shiloh, Zahara and Pax. The latest coordinate to join the list is that of Brad?s birthplace. She has more than a dozen tattoos covering up her body such as the Gothic letter tattoo between her shoulder blades which says ?Know Your Rights?, a Buddhist Pali incantation written in Khmer script, an Arabic script tattoo on her right arm meaning ?Determination? and the Roman number 13.

Saif Ali Khan

The rage among celebs and fans to get names of their spouses and lovers inked began after Saif Ali Khan got his lady love Kareena?s name tattooed on his arm. Relatively early into the relationship, Saif got Kareena?s name inked and literally wore his heart on his sleeve.

Rihanna

Rihanna has eighteen known tattoos all over her body ? from head to ankle. She even has created a tattoo by her own ? including a little umbrella on her tattooist arm. She started her romance with ink in 2006 when her first music note was created. Then there is a tattoo written in reverse so she can read it in the mirror. It says ?Never a failure, always a lesson? tattooed across her upper right chest ?in light gray ink. She also has a Pis?c?es sign behind her left ear, a Sans?k?rit prayer going down from her hip to her derriere, a star in her left ear, an Arabic phrase in her ribcage area, a trail of stars going down her back and the list goes on. Her latest is a mammoth tattoo of an Egyptian goddess on her chest, it is dedication to her grandmother who passed away.

Priyanka Chopra

While the rest of the film fraternity were getting names of their spouses and children tattooed on their body, Priyanka Chopra made heads turn and stood apart when she dedicated her tattoo to her father and got the words ?Daddy?s little girl? inked on her right hand.

Lil Wayne

Rapper Lil Wayne got his first tattoo at the age of 14 in honour of his father. He said he got his next tattoo to emulate the late rapper Tupac Shakur. He also has four tear drops on his face which are for the people who have been killed in his family, ?Fear God? and the ?C? between his eyes which is for his mother ?Cita? and his last name ?Carter Tune? next to left ear which is short for Lil Tunechile?oncious; a smiley face on the inside of bottom lip ?Misunderstood? and two rows of stars with some of them being ultraviolet and this is just on his face. On his neck he has the image of a gun on the right side to cover up a previous tattoo that read ?I Am Pimp?. He then has ?Blessed? inked on the middle of his throat, but it was later covered up with ?You? and ?YM? which is the Young Money logo on the left side of his neck. On his hands he has ?Hot? on one hand and ?Boy? on the other hand which is a group that he was a member of before going solo. on each of his palms he has ?A Gun? and ?The World? inked so that he can always say he has them in his hands. He also has ?Trigger? written on his fingers.

Sanjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt is one actor who has a serious love for tattoos and can easily be the most tattooed man in Bollywood. His tattoos include his wife?s name (Manyata), Lord Shiva, a four-inch Tibetan Om with Dutt?s zodiac sign, the Leo and his lucky number ?1? below it and many more.

Susmita Sen

Susmita Sen is one who is clearly bitten by the tattoo bug. She likes to express herself through her body art and has at least four tattoos. Sen has a tattoo which rea?ds ?Temptation and Glory to God al?o?ne, I Am, I will either find a way or make on?. She also has a tattoo of a tiger cub.

Tattoo talk with Sameer Patange

His clientele includes the best of Bollywood ranging from Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan to Kangana Ranaut and Susmita Sen. Tattoo artist Sameer Patange is in town for Tattoo festival at Park to ink the Hyderabadis. He divulges his favourite Bollywood customers and also things to keep in mind heading to a tattoo parlour.

Favourite clients:

1. Susmita Sen is more like a friend to me than a client. Each of her tattoos has a hidden meaning. When she comes across, something that inspires her, she turns up at the studio to get them inked. One of my favourite tattoos on her is that of a leopard cub on her back.

2. Hrithik Roshan was fun to work with and also very corporative. He didn?t pose any trouble when he got his sons? names tattooed on his arms.

Tips for Hyderabadis before getting inked:

1. Think a 100 times before getting a tattoo. There are people who regret their decision so wait for the right design and artist before getting a tattoo.

2. It is a very bad idea to inked when you are drunk. It is a potentially life changing decision, so wouldn?t you want to know exactly what you are getting done?

Apple iPad sales disappoint, Street eyes the holidays

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc delivered a second straight quarter of disappointing results and iPad sales fell well short of Wall Street's targets, marring its record of consistently blowing past investors' expectations.

Shares in the world's most valuable technology company briefly dipped to levels not seen since the start of August, after it delivered a 27 percent rise in revenue for its fourth quarter while earnings rose 24 percent.

The numbers, while in line with expectations, lacked the positive surprises that investors had grown used to and came after Apple undershot revenue targets in the previous quarter. Its shares bounced back, however, after CEO Tim Cook told analysts on a conference call that the latest iPhone 5 was heavily backlogged but the company had mostly worked out kinks in its iPhone supply chain.

Apple shipped 26.9 million iPhones in the last quarter, somewhat higher than the 25 million to 26 million that Wall Street analysts had predicted. But sales of the iPad came in at 14 million, well below lowered forecasts for the tablet as the economy remained weak and consumers awaited the iPad mini, which will hit store shelves next month.

Analysts say the real test for the company will come during the crucial holiday shopping season, when competition will reach fever-pitch with Apple, Amazon.com Inc, Google Inc and Microsoft Corp all fielding new gadgets.

"Going into earnings we were wondering if the slowing economy will catch up with Wall Street and it has," said Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund.

"Apple is very well-positioned with the iPad and now the iPad mini. It has a great smartphone and we expect the iPhone 5 to sell very well. The outlook is conservative but that's not surprising. Err on the side of caution is a proven formula."

Just hours after Apple's results, its main smartphone rival Samsung Electronics Co reported a near doubling in quarterly earnings, and while it did not detail smartphone shipments, they are estimated to have surged to 58 million.

Apple heads into the current quarter after refreshing almost all of its product lines, including introducing an upgraded, fourth-generation full-sized iPad. The December quarter will show how well consumers respond to Apple's latest gamble - the iPad mini that will go on sale on November 2.

CAR THAT FLIES AND FLOATS

For the December quarter, Apple forecast revenue of $52 billion (32 billion pounds), below the average estimate of $55 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. It is expecting margins to come in at 36 percent, far lower than analysts' expected 43 percent.

Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer mostly attributed the lower margin and conservative guidance to a combination of a stronger dollar, higher costs associated with new products, and the fact that Apple's next fiscal quarter has one less week than the same period a year ago.

Apple's stock was holding steady at $609.40 in extended trade after flirting with the $600 level. The shares had ended regular trade at $609.54.

Supply constraints holding up sales of the iPad and iPhone dominated discussions between analysts and Apple executives during the post-results conference call. Apple had struggled to deliver large quantities of the iPhone 5 since its launch in late September, with the waitlist for the device at one point stretching to three weeks in some regions.

"Our supply output is significantly higher than it was earlier in October," Cook said, referring to the iPhone 5. "And I'm confident that we'll be able to supply quite a few during the quarter."

Cook also opined on Microsoft's new Windows 8-based Surface tablet that will hit stores in the wee hours of Friday.

"I haven't personally played with the Surface yet, but what we're reading about it, is that it's a fairly compromised, confusing product," he said. "I suppose you could design a car that flies and floats, but I don't think it would do all of those things very well."

Despite the lacklustre fourth quarter, Apple put up big numbers for the year. It ended its fiscal 2012 with a 45 percent increase in revenue to $156.5 billion, while net income was up 61 percent at $41.7 billion.

For the final fiscal quarter, it posted net income of $8.2 billion or $8.67 a diluted share in the fiscal fourth quarter on revenue of $35.96 billion, versus $6.6 billion or $7.05 a share a year earlier. Analysts had expected on average that Apple would earn $8.75 per share.

Apple ended the quarter with $121.3 billion in cash and securities, of which $83 billion was offshore.

Ex-manager of Britney Spears says he was punched

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Britney Spears' ex-manager described from the witness stand Wednesday a scene of domestic warfare, saying the superstar's father chased him around a kitchen, punched him and threatened his life.

Sam Lutfi, who is suing Spears' parents for defamation, testified while they watched from across the courtroom.

He denied accusations made in a book by Lynne Spears that he was a Svengali who became the gatekeeper of her daughter's world, locking her parents out of her life.

He contends he was a benevolent caretaker who protected Britney during her highly publicized meltdown.

Lutfi's direct testimony concluded in dramatic fashion as he was overcome by tears while describing the aftermath of the publication of the book.

"After the book came out, there was a huge spike of death threats that were pretty bad," he testified. "People I know were shunning me. Websites were created to kill me. People wished I was dead. People wished my family ... "

He didn't finish the sentence because he was crying.

"How did it make you feel," asked his attorney, Joseph Schleimer.

"Depressed, anxious and suicidal," Lutfi testified.

Lutfi told of days leading to Britney's hospitalization at a psychiatric unit, and jurors saw a video of the star ordering him around outside her home hours before she was taken away.

She was demanding that he let her drive her car and told him to get in the passenger seat. The scene outside her home was surreal, with TV lights and paparazzi surrounding her.

Lutfi said Britney feared her father Jamie Spears and fled her home when she heard he was coming. Lutfi said the father confronted him twice and punched him on the second visit.

"Jamie came barging into the house. He lunged at me and chased me around the kitchen island. He was spitting, yelling, shouting at me, and said I had hurt his daughter and he was going to beat the hell out of me and I'd better get out of the house," Lutfi testified.

After 10 minutes, he said, Jamie Spears was escorted out by security guards. But the next morning, he got into the house again and the battle resumed, Lutfi said.

"He cornered me in the kitchen, punched me in the solar plexus and threatened to kill me," Lutfi testified.

"How did it feel?" Schleimer asked.

"It hurt," Lutfi replied.

Asked what he did, he said, "I ran to the game room and locked myself in."

A lawyer for Spears said in opening statements that the father never physically assaulted Lutfi and merely touched him on the chest.

With Schleimer reading excerpts from Lynne Spears' book, Lutfi methodically denied every one of her accusations.

"Were you in complete control of Britney's life?" Schleimer asked.

"No," Lutfi said firmly.

"Did you attempt to keep Britney's family away?" he was asked.

"To the contrary, sir," Lutfi answered.

He denied cutting wires to phone lines in the house and hiding Britney's cellphones. He also said he never drugged the superstar.

Lutfi was expected to undergo cross-examination later in the day.

He is suing for damages for defamation and for a 15 percent share of the millions of dollars Britney made while he was with her.

The singer remains under the conservatorship of her father and has been told by a judge not to attend or testify in the trial.

She has made a remarkable comeback from her hard times, now acting as a judge on TV's "The X Factor."

Team Building Session? Try this Exercise

Recently I learned of a unique team building session idea that I have been itching to try out. I was able to wrangle a friend into testing it out at her office, and it had very positive results. Today we?ll be looking at what I?ve come to call the Twenty Minute Challenge. (I heard someone at HRevolution mention this a few weeks back, but I can?t remember who! If someone knows, please tell me so the person can get the credit for this.)

The purpose of the Twenty Minute Challenge

More so now than ever, we need people on our teams who can think quickly, respond coherently during high pressure situations, and present complex information effectively. This team building session is focused on helping your people do all three of those things well.

How it works

Let?s say you have ten people on your team. You break them into teams and give each team this short list of instructions:

• You have ten minutes to read your book.
• You will have five minutes to create a short presentation on your book?s main topics.
• You will share your presentation with the group for three to five minutes.

And then you set them loose to tackle the challenge ahead. Sounds interesting, right?

Just to make sure you?re totally prepared, you?ll need a few materials to facilitate this team building session:

• Writing utensils and paper for each participant
• A computer for each team to develop slides, conduct research, etc.
• 3-5 different books on business-related topics
  OR
  3-5 eBooks on business-related topics (these free ones would be useful)
• A presentation screen and projector (Optional, if you plan to have them present formally)

Books to consider

If you don?t already have some books in mind, here are a few I would recommend. This list is not exhaustive; just a handful that I have reviewed and can vouch for in terms of high quality ideas and concepts that would be valuable for HR, recruiting, and business leaders.

Just a quick note: I would steer clear of narrative-based or parable books. These are valuable tools and have their place, but they are harder to glean short tidbits of information from in the style necessary for this sort of team building session.

Real life example

These team building sessions always sound great on paper. But how did it play out in a real situation? The note below is from a regular reader and a new blogger in the HR space. Kristina is the Office Manager for the local Epsco Staffing company here in Huntsville and uses exercises like these to keep her team sharp. Now I?ll turn it over to Kristina to explain their experience.

Kristina: We had 3 small groups of 2-3 people each and used 101 Strategies for Recruiting Success, The Levity Effect & Finding Keepers as our books.

I explained the project and then assigned each group their book. Of course they all looked terrified and upset that they only had 10 minutes to ?read? the book! One team took off with their book to a quiet place in the office and started reading chapter 1 right off! The other 2 groups started with a plan. One group read the key points out loud so the other could take notes and one group divided up the reading, note taking and online research immediately!

101 Strategies for Recruiting Success- This group approached the task by pulling chapter titles and bullet points from the book to summarize. They fed the info into a power point presentation and one person spoke about the book while the other person flipped the PowerPoint. What was really great about this group is I?ve been watching their ability to work together as a team decline over the last couple of weeks and this was just the spark they needed to realize they can work well together and produce good results! Now that they?ve been reminded about that I can cross that off my to do list?

The Levity Effect- This group was hilarious! Note taking/reading through the key points & on-line research. They probably freaked out the least about the ?10 minute rule? and that was no surprise to me. They immediately divided the work up and started their tasks. One of them googled the book and was linked directly to your post-so I think you and they had the same key points! This book was a good choice for our group because we absolutely believe in having fun at work and I think it made them feel better that it?s not just a ?Kristina idea.? They pulled ideas from the book and shared them with us as things they want us to start doing in the office and asked the group some ?hard interview questions? so they get bonus points!

Finders Keepers- This group was the one that almost tackled me to get to a quiet space to start reading. I didn?t see them take a notebook or anything, just the book! I was a little shocked and very curious how that was going to turn out. They ended up only getting through one chapter, but they were successful in turning that into a three minute presentation. I asked them about their approach and it was attributed to the ?leader? of that groups old school paper pushing ways. She didn?t want to give a presentation on something she hadn?t read so her best solution was to start reading and see how far she could get!

The power of teamwork

Ultimately they all had a different ways of getting to the end, but they all worked together in their teams! The first 2 groups did the best at getting as much information from the book down to an informative summary. All 3 groups did well on their ?presentation on the fly!? The best part was when they started talking about how well they all worked as a team and it was kind of like an ?ah-ha? moment in the office today (it?s amazing how quickly work can be done when we all work with each other instead of against each other)! It wasn?t met with resistance, they had fun with it and they are interested in reading some of the books we used! As many hours as my girls work I never thought they would want to do some outside of work reading, but I was wrong!

Wrapping up
