This Retro Fridge Is One of the Things You Miss From the 1950s

Eating in the 1950s probably sucked in terms of convenience. No internet, meaning no Seamless Web. But the style was rad—and you can harness that aspect in your own kitchen with Servis's new retro fridges. More »

Saturn's rings may double up as a moon factory

Many of the moons in the solar system could have been spawned from giant rings around planets. According to a new model, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and even the Earth may have once had ring systems that gave rise to satellites.

We used to think that moons form around planets in the same way as planets form around stars: coalescing from a gaseous disc that surrounded the planet as it formed. That model still applies to some moons, like those of Jupiter.

But Saturn's moons follow a peculiar pattern. Their orbits bunch near the edge of the rings, and the moons get more spread out and more massive as they get further away.

The rings mark Saturn's Roche limit: the distance from the planet beyond which its gravitational tidal forces are weak enough to let moons there survive. Inside the Roche limit, however, Saturn's gravity would pull moons apart and add them to its rings. Some astronomers think this is how the planet gained its rings in the first place.

But theory says that such rings do not remain static. The constituent fragments that lie near the inner, planetary side of the ring should constantly exchange angular momentum with fragments further out. This means the inner fragments lose energy and fall towards Saturn while the outer ones gain energy and retreat from the planet.

Aur?lien Crida at the Observatory of the Cote d'Azur in Nice, France, and S?bastien Charnoz at the Denis Diderot University in Paris have now run simulations of this effect. They showed that material leaving the outer edge of the ring would pool into a small moon, which then gradually migrates away from the planet.

When enough material is left in the rings, a second moon would grow where the first moon formed. This moon, too, would gradually move away, allowing a third moon to grow, and so on. The earlier moons would probably be larger, because they had a bigger ring to draw material from than the later moons. The early moons also have more time to collide with each other, fusing into larger satellites. "We see that for Saturn's moons, it fits quite well," Crida says.

Smoking gun

Neither Uranus nor Neptune has a massive ring system today, but the distribution of moons around both planets is similar enough to the Saturn pattern to suggest that they once did ? and that the rings gave rise to both of the ice giants' satellites. "We think this is a smoking gun of this process," Crida says. Uranus and Neptune clearly lack big rings today, though, so we would need a better understanding of the ring-forming process to establish whether they might have done in the past.

Surprisingly, even the Earth could have had a ring once. Earth's moon probably formed when a large body collided with the young planet and sent hot mantle material flying into spaceMovie Camera.

"The process through which this material would eventually form the moon was not investigated in detail so far," Crida says. If the material settled into a massive ring, it could have spread and congealed into a single moon in as little time as a month, he says.

Wall Street ends higher after swings on 'fiscal cliff'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks finished higher on Thursday as investors bought on sporadic dips in a market roiled by conflicting comments from Washington about negotiations on an agreement to avoid the "fiscal cliff."

Tech shares, including Research In Motion and Advanced Micro Devices , helped the Nasdaq outperform the broader market. Telecommunications and health-care stocks were the day's best-performing sectors.

Reflecting the uncertainty surrounding U.S. budget talks, trading was choppy. Wall Street reversed early gains and fell shortly after House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, dashed hopes that lawmakers were getting closer to a budget deal that would avert automatic tax increases and spending cuts set for early 2013 - the fiscal cliff - that could push the U.S. economy into a recession next year. But the market rebounded by afternoon and the three major U.S. stock indexes rebounded to near their session highs.

"There is an emotional part in buying on the small dips here. Investors are more worried about missing the rally than losing money as they believe that the 'fiscal cliff' will be solved eventually," said James Dailey, portfolio manager at TEAM Asset Strategy Fund in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

"Until the fiscal cliff is solved, the madness of the crowd will not subside."

Discussions on Capitol Hill are aimed at avoiding big automatic spending cuts and tax hikes, known as the fiscal cliff, that will start taking effect beginning in January.

Boehner's comment about a lack of progress in talks with the White House was one of a series of contrary pronouncements by lawmakers and the Obama administration over whether Washington will finally cut a deal.

There have been some signs that leaders are moving closer to a fiscal agreement. The S&P 500 has gained about 5 percent recently after a sell-off that took it down almost 8 percent following the U.S. election on November 6. But investors remain wary that politicians' ad hoc statements can spark quick reversals in the market.

U.S.-listed shares of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion rose 4 percent to $11.54 after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to "buy" from "neutral" on optimism ahead of the launch of the BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc shares gained 4.1 percent to $2.04 on plans to sell and lease back its campus in Austin, Texas. The sale and lease-back will raise cash and fund its chipmaking business as Advanced Micro Devices diversifies beyond the struggling PC industry into new markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> rose 36.71 points, or 0.28 percent, to 13,021.82 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> gained 6.02 points, or 0.43 percent, to 1,415.95. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> advanced 20.25 points, or 0.68 percent, to close at 3,012.03.

So far this week, the Dow is up 0.1 percent, the S&P 500 is up 0.5 percent and the Nasdaq is up 1.5 percent.

But shares of top retailers retreated in the wake of data showing a weak start to November sales after Superstorm Sandy. Kohl's Corp fell 12 percent to $45.02.

Tiffany shares dropped 6.2 percent to $59.80 after the upscale jeweler reported quarterly results and cut its full-year sales and profit forecasts.

Supervalu shares sank 18.6 percent to $2.28 after a report that Cerberus Capital Management was having difficulty obtaining financing to buy out the troubled grocery chain.

Data showed the U.S. economy grew faster than initially thought in the third quarter as businesses restocked, but consumer and business spending were revised lower in a sobering reminder of the economic recovery's underlying weakness.

Contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes rose more than expected in October, a sign the housing market recovery advanced into the fourth quarter despite a mammoth storm and concerns over looming tax hikes. Homebuilders' shares rose. The PHLX housing index <.hgx> rose 0.8 percent.

About 6.15 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, below the daily average so far this year of about 6.48 billion shares.

On both the NYSE and the Nasdaq, roughly three stocks rose for every one that fell.

How To Make It Last: Three Keys To The Long-Distance Relationship

This isn?t about love. But it is about a successful, long-term client relationship ? how it has evolved and matured ? and how, with constant refocus, it keeps moving forward.

Graphica has partnered with Crown Equipment Corporation for a long time. Creative Director Drew Cronenwett remembers when he arrived at Graphica as a rookie designer 26 years ago: a Crown collateral piece was his first project.

Since then, Crown has manufactured new equipment, developed new programs, and experienced all the ups and downs any large multinational company would. Of course, we?ve changed, too. But despite all the changing, we?ve consistently delivered spot-on strategy and design. Key #1: Build your relationship on a strong foundation.

Now, nearly three decades later, Drew heads up Crown Europe for Graphica. In fact, he recently returned from a three-week trip to Crown Europe headquarters in Munich, Germany. He ate wiener schnitzel and took some incredible photos. But, most of all, he drove reach trucks, toured warehouses and manufacturing facilities, and talked about upcoming products and strategy with his Crown counterparts ? I?m pretty sure he shared a few beers with the team, too. Key #2: Stay in touch. Stay informed. Nothing can replace face time, and even if you have to travel thousands of miles, let them know the relationship is worth it.

In part, what Drew discovered is that Crown?s needs have changed. As they look to the future, they intend to incorporate more technology and software into the design of their heavy equipment. In addition, they plan to approach their clients ? including those in Russia, the Middle East, and even Africa ? with a new way of marketing their products.

New technology? Strategic ways to reach your targets? Emerging markets? We?re listening. In fact, we?re already working on it (check out our recent Ektron certification). Turns out, Crown?s interests have changed much like Graphica?s capabilities. So Drew hit the ground running once he arrived back stateside, and big new projects are already in the works. Key #3: Listen. Respond. Be prepared to do what it takes to move the relationship forward.

Dear Abby has nothing on us. We value our client relationships, we invest in them and we know how to make great relationships, like that with legacy client, Crown, grow and get better with time. Most importantly, we know that healthy relationships are the only key to good business.

Inventories boost U.S. economic growth but trend weak

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy grew faster than initially thought in the third quarter as restocking by businesses provided a big boost, but consumer and business spending were revised lower in a sobering reminder of the recovery's underlying weakness.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Thursday, with export growth also helping to offset the weakest consumer spending and first drop in business investment in more than a year.

It was the fastest growth since late 2011 and much quicker than the 2 percent rate the government estimated last month. But it was hardly a sign of strength as the lift from inventories will likely be lost in the fourth quarter.

Growth in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, was cut by more than half a percentage point, suggesting the rise in inventories reflected unwanted goods piling up in warehouses.

The possibility of an inventory overhang, drag from superstorm Sandy and fears over the so-called fiscal cliff look set to undermine the economy in the final months of the year.

Separately, retailers reported unexpectedly weak sales in November, which many pinned on the storm that ripped into the East Coast late last month.

"The headwinds for fourth quarter GDP have kind of intensified. At best, the economy may just coast its way into 2013," said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist at Moody's Analytics in West Chester Pennsylvania.

The fiscal cliff could suck $600 billion from the economy early next year and fuel a fresh recession, unless Congress and the Obama administration agree on a less-severe plan to cut budget deficits.

JOBLESS CLAIM FALL AGAIN AFTER STORM SURGE

A separate report from the Labor Department showed initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 393,000 last week. Still, they remain well above where they stood before Sandy hit.

There are fears the monster storm could severely dent employment growth in November, further undercutting the economy.

"Employment growth could slow dramatically in November to around the 100,000 range" from 171,000 in October, said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities in New York. The government releases data on November employment on December 7.

Stocks on Wall Street largely ignored the data and instead took their cues from talks in Washington over the fiscal cliff. They were largely unchanged near mid-day, while prices for U.S. government debt were higher. The dollar was holding steady against a basket of currencies.

INVENTORIES ADD, NOT SUBTRACT

Business inventories added more than three quarters of a percentage point to third-quarter GDP growth, rather than being a drag as previously reported.

Excluding inventories, GDP rose at a revised 1.9 percent rate, underscoring the sluggishness of demand. Final sales of goods and services produced in the United States previously had been estimated to have increased at a 2.1 percent pace.

A smaller trade deficit was also a factor behind the upward revision to GDP as export growth outpaced a rise in imports. But the trend in exports is unlikely to be sustained given slowing global demand, especially in China and debt troubled Europe.

Government spending rose sharply in the quarter, but that is not expected to last given belt-tightening in Washington.

Other details of the report were rather weak. Consumer spending was cut to a 1.4 percent growth rate - the slowest since the second quarter of 2011 - from the 2 percent gain previously reported.

Even more worrying, there were downward revisions to personal income and the saving rate, which suggests consumer spending will remain lackluster in the months ahead.

Business spending was revised to show a much deeper cutback, with equipment and software spending the weakest since the second quarter of 2009.

"It is hard to have a strong economy when households are not hitting the malls hard and businesses have assumed the turtle position fearful of a crash due to the fiscal cliff," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania.

There was a modest downward revision to spending on residential construction, which continues to benefit from the Federal Reserve's ultra accommodative monetary policy stance, which has driven mortgage rates to record lows.

The firming housing market tone was captured by a third report showing contracts to buy previously owned homes surged in October.

Obama spotlights middle class meets with CEOs on ?fiscal cliff?

In this July 6, 2011, file photo, President Barack Obama sits in front of a screen displaying a question he tweeted??Looking for leverage in "fiscal cliff" talks with Republicans, President Barack Obama on Wednesday was to host middle-class Americans whose taxes risk going up January 1 then retreat behind closed doors for talks with top corporate executives. The White House also worked to enlist support on Twitter, highlighting a hashtag, #My2K, for tweets about the standoff.

Obama planned to deliver a speech at 11:35 a.m. to press Congress to extend Bush-era tax cuts on income up to $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families ? surrounded by Americans who stand to be affected when those reductions expire January 1.

The White House says that "a typical middle class family of four" would pay Uncle Sam an additional $2,200 unless those tax cuts are extended. Obama campaigned for reelection in large part on the argument that tax cuts that chiefly benefit the richest Americans? must expire in order to save popular government programs that face the axe. Republicans argue that will reduce investments that generate jobs at a time when the economy is still sputtering, with unemployment stubbornly high. The GOP has signaled it would be willing to consider boosting tax revenues as long as Democrats agree to overhaul popular entitlement programs like Medicare or Medicaid.

That $2,200 figure is the inspiration for #My2K, part of what the White House describes as an "online push" behind the president's approach. Obama has highlighted Twitter hashtags in past disputes with Republicans: #40dollars in the fight over the payroll tax holiday and #dontdoublemyrate in a feud over student loans.

The president, who spoke to top Republican and Democratic leaders over the weekend, was to make brief public remarks at the top of a meeting with his cabinet at 3 pm before huddling with senior executives from major American corporations.

Here is the list of attendees, as provided by the White House:

  • Frank Blake, Chairman and CEO, The Home Depot
  • Lloyd Blankfein, Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs Group
  • Joe Echeverria, CEO, Deloitte LLP
  • Ken Frazier, President and CEO, Merck and Co.
  • Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, Coca Cola
  • Terry Lundgren, Chairman, President, and CEO, Macy's Inc.
  • Marissa Mayer, CEO and President, Yahoo!
  • Douglas Oberhelman, Chairman and CEO, Caterpillar
  • Ian Read, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer
  • Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast
  • Ed Rust, Chairman and CEO, State Farm Insurance Co.
  • Arne Sorenson, President and CEO, Marriott
  • Randall Stephenson, Chairman and CEO, AT&T
  • Patricia Woertz, President and CEO, Archer Daniels Midland

The "fiscal cliff" refers to an economically painful set of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that come into effect January 1 unless Congress and the president reach a deal.

Sikorsky sees vibrant military helicopter market

STRATFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - The U.S. defense budget is under intense pressure as automatic spending cuts loom, but Sikorsky Aircraft says the longer-term outlook for military helicopters remains bright given several new programs getting started in the United States and strong overseas demand.

Samir Mehta, president of Sikorsky military systems, said in an interview that he is confident that two of the biggest opportunities for his company - a U.S. Air Force competition for new search and rescue helicopters and a U.S. Navy competition for new presidential helicopters - will survive, even if the Pentagon is forced to make additional budget cuts.

Sikorsky, Lockheed Martin Corp , Boeing Co and other weapons makers are anxiously waiting to see if Congress will avert an additional $500 billion in defense spending cuts that are due to start taking effect on January 2. Those slashes would occur on top of $487 billion in cuts already on the books.

Both cuts would phase in over 10 years. Many executives say they expect some additional cuts to military spending, even if a deal is reached to avoid the automatic budgets reductions under "sequestration."

Stratford, Connecticut-based Sikorsky, a unit of United Technologies Corp , is the maker of the UH-60 Black Hawk and other helicopters.

Most defense companies expect revenue to come under pressure in coming years after more than a decade of growth in military spending. However, they do not forecast sudden declines in January, since most weapons deals stretch over many years.

The 87-year-old Sikorsky is also investing heavily to develop its new S-97 Raider helicopter in hopes that the U.S. Army will decide later this year to buy a new helicopter to replace its aging OH-58 Kiowa Warriors, rather than upgrade the existing fleet. The Kiowa Warriors are made by Bell Helicopter, a unit of Textron Inc .

"It's very easy to be focused on the short term in the next two to three years, and say, 'Boy, the meteor's coming at us and we're headed for really tough times,' but if you look at this industry over the next 20-30 years, it's going to be vibrant," Mehta told Reuters in an interview at the company's sprawling headquarters on Tuesday.

FUTURE VERTICAL LIFT

Mehta said Sikorsky and other helicopter makers were also gearing up for what U.S. Army officials are calling "Future Vertical Lift," a massive program that would replace many of the Black Hawks and Boeing Apache helicopters now in service.

"I know there's short-term pressure but ... the life cycle of an aviation development program will outlive whatever short-term crisis we happen to be in at the time," he said.

Mehta, a trained lawyer who began his career at United Technologies' Otis Elevator unit, said the lingering uncertainty about future budgets was frustrating, but his company was focused on continuing to deliver those helicopters already on order to the U.S. military on time and on budget.

"There's no shield against sequestration, but hopefully when they go through the process - if they go through the process ... they'll look at performance as a key determining factor of whether or not you'll be specifically targeted," he said.

Pentagon officials have said that weapons programs that are over budget or behind schedule will be increasingly vulnerable to cuts as budget pressures mount.

Mehta said Pentagon officials also seemed to appreciate Sikorsky's investment of its own funds to develop its new X2 helicopter, which is considered the fastest helicopter ever built, and a larger military prototype, the S-97.

Sikorsky, which together with Boeing dominates the U.S. military helicopter market, spent $50 million to develop the X2 - which uses two rotors and a rear propeller to overcome the aerodynamic limitations of conventional helicopters - and "healthy multiples" of that sum on the S-97, Mehta said, although he declined to give specific numbers.

He said the company would continue work on the S-97, which is expected to have its first flight in the fourth quarter of 2014, even if U.S. Army officials decide not to launch a competition to replace the OH-58 Kiowa Warrior armed scout.

In the longer term, the S-97 could be a contender for the Army's next-generation helicopter program, or future vertical lift, which some see as the "Joint Strike Fighter" of military helicopters, Mehta said, referring to the massive and lucrative next-generation strike aircraft weapon systems for the United States and its allies.

The speed, maneuverability and agility of the new helicopter will provide "game-changing" capabilities to the U.S. military, Kevin Bredenbeck, chief test pilot for Sikorsky, told Reuters in a separate interview.

PRAGMATIC APPROACH

Steve Engebretson, who heads Sikorsky's armed aerial scout effort, said the company was confident that it could price the new helicopters at a cost in the "mid-teens" of millions - just slightly more than the Army would likely spend to upgrade the OH-58 helicopters it is using now. But he said the new aircraft would give the Army far more capabilities than it has now.

Other helicopter makers, including Europe's EADS , which has a new helicopter called the X3, and AgustaWestland, a unit of Italy's Finmeccanica SpA , have also urged the Army to launch a new development program.

Army officials are expected to reach a decision about the issue in coming weeks, although the decision will still need approval by top Pentagon acquisition officials.

Mehta said he did not expect the Air Force and Navy to back off their new helicopter competitions, both of which come after failed earlier programs, given the increased age of the current fleets, which is driving up maintenance costs, and the Pentagon's increased focus on affordable programs.

He said Pentagon officials also recognized that they could not continually ask industry to invest time and money to prepare bids for competitions only to see programs get cancelled.

"They've taken a really pragmatic, cost-effective approach," he said. "That provides us with a little more confidence that they won't back away from these programs once they've started."

Sikorsky also sees strong growth in international markets in coming years, especially in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Mehta said, noting that a majority of the helicopters in use around the world were over 20 years old.

"There's a practical aspect to this, which is that people need to recapitalize and replace their fleets, whether it's the (U.S. Department of Defense) or even international militaries."

The Montreal-based company, which owns Shorts planemakers in Belfast, on Tuesday confirmed it has signed a deal worth more than ?4.8 billion (7.8 billion US dollars) with private charter firm VistaJet, for up to 142 Global business aircraft.

The contract includes firm orders for 56 of the jets and options on another 86 with the value of the firm order topping ?1.9 billion (3.1 billion US dollars).

Bombardier in Belfast is responsible for the design and manufacture of a range of parts for the Global aircraft family, including the forward fuselages, engine nacelles, horizontal stabilisers and other components.

It is the largest business aircraft sale in Bombardier?s history and will help secure the jobs of around 5,500 people in Belfast who work on a range of Bombardier programmes for regional and business aircraft.

A spokesman for the company said:

?The announcement of this order for up to 142 of Bombardier?s Global business jets is a tremendous endorsement of Bombardier, our employees and the Global aircraft family, and is very much welcome. We in Belfast play a major role in the business jet sector ? an important market which Bombardier leads. This order ? the largest ever business aircraft sale in Bombardier?s history ? will help to sustain jobs and secure our long-term future, in addition to benefiting our local supply chain.?

Work will start shortly and the first order involves 25 Global 5000, 25 Global 6000 and six Global 8000 jets, Deliveries are to start in 2014, Bombardier said.

Steve Ridolfi, president, Bombardier Business Aircraft, said the company was thrilled to have been picked by Vistajet.

?We welcome Vistajet?s ongoing commitment to Global coverage within existing and developing new markets,? he said.

?Our Global aircraft are perfect for Vistajet?s business strategy to deliver the ultimate business jet family to all corners of the world.?

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster described the deal as a ?welcome boost? for the workforce in Belfast.

She said: ?Bombardier in Northern Ireland plays a major role in the business jet sector, and this multi-million pound contract is a welcome boost for their workforce here. It reflects a confidence in the company and in its staff in Northern Ireland. Bombardier has had a presence in Belfast since 1989 and as our largest private sector employer they are pivotal to the local economy.?

The contract was also welcomed by the union Unite, whose membership includes many of the Bombardier workforce in Belfast.

?This is fantastic news for the committed workforce and manufacturing in Northern Ireland,? said Unite?s Irish Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly.

He added: ?This historic order is very welcome at this particularly fragile economic time. Unite understands that it will secure the current workforce levels for a number of years.?

The only other order of this magnitude for Bombardier is last June?s commitment from NetJets to buy up to 275 Challenger jets, valued at about ?4.5 billion (7.3 billion US dollars).

Business jet orders have been bouncing back since the slump in the wake of the 2008 economic slowdown.

VistaJet Holding SA, which bills itself as ?the world?s luxury aviation company,? said the order builds on its strategy of providing more wide-cabin, long-range luxury aircraft.

The company said the new Global jets will serve high-growth markets such as Russia, China, the Middle East and Africa.

?This order is the most significant milestone for VistaJet and is a testimony to our successful strategy that focuses on global coverage,? said VistaJet founder and chairman Thomas Flohr.

?Earlier in the year we announced landmark agreements with partners in both China and Russia and, since then, the level of demand we have seen in growth markets around the globe has been unprecedented,? he added.

VistaJet is based in Switzerland but its main office is in London.

The Five Best Books On Menopause

Since there?s a good chance that you?re wondering the same thing, I thought I?d share my recommendations for five books, that in my opinion, do an excellent job of explaining, in a thorough and unbiased way, the many medical and emotional issues that occur during the menopause years.

Do what I do and check these books out of your local library to first see which one you like the best, then purchase it for your own personal library. That way, you?ll always have good, reliable information at your fingertips for years to come.

Our Bodies, OurselvesThe first? Our Bodies, Ourselves?was?written for us in the early 70s. It was a landmark book that helped fuel the women?s liberation movement with its frank discussion of a woman?s body. The publishers, the?Boston Women?s Health Book Collective, caught up to us again six years ago with this edition on Menopause, which I find equally progressive. They cover the basics of Menopause (?What?s Happening in Our Bodies?), which I think women just entering the perimenopausal phase will find particularly helpful.

What makes this book stand out??I like the way the authors have included a discussion of non-medical, emotional issues that have to do with our ?changing selves,? in chapters on body image, sexuality, and family life and the workplace.

You can read excerpts from this book and view additional content on the?publisher?s website.

The Smart Woman’s Guide to Midlife and BeyondThe Smart Woman?s Guide to Midlife and Beyond: A No Nonsense Approach to Staying Healthy After 50
is authored by Drs. Janet Horn, a gynecologist and Robin Miller, an internist who specializes in integrative medicine.? They?re both in their 50s and have been friends since their med school days, so their close rapport is reflected in the way they provide information and advice. They talk about their own experiences, share patient stories and conclude each chapter with a ?chat? that makes you feel that you?re among friends who are dealing with the same mid-life changes as you.

What makes this book stand out?? What?s especially interesting, and valuable to the reader, is the fact that one of the authors takes hormones and the other doesn?t and ?never will!? so their ?conversations reveal the issues of the HRT debate in a way that?s not didactic. It?s a brilliant way to show that there?s more than one way to get through menopause and every woman has to decide what works best for her.

The Everything Health Guide to Menopause?is chock full of information about the mid-life transition beginningInformative book on menopause with a thorough explanation of the initial, peri-menopausal phase. It?s written by? Kate Bracy Kalb RN, a women?s health care practitioner, with a technical review by a gynecologist,?Kathryn Arendt, MD.? It?s quite extensive, but well organized and easy to read. I?d bet that whatever question you have about the changes you?re experiencing will be answered in these pages.

What makes this book stand out?? I applaud the author for bringing up the need to find a doctor whose qualifications match your?new?needs.? This one thing can make a big difference in how well you navigate the menopause years. In her chapter titled, ?A Partner on the Path ? Choosing a Health Care Provider,? Ms. Kalb encourages readers to explore your options early in the menopausal process and then, once you?ve found the right practitioner, take charge.

Menopause, Ellen Dolgen

Since it?s publication date two years ago, I?ve been recommending Ellen Dolgen?s book,?Shmirshky: the pursuit of hormone happiness?to my younger friends in the sputtering stage of menopause (aka perimenopause), who don?t have a clue about what?s happening to their bodies or what to expect in the years ahead. The author covers a lot of ground ? from HRT and hot flashes to memory lapses and vaginal dryness ? in an intimate, girlfriend-to-girlfriend voice that makes this book instructive and engaging.

What makes this book stand out? ?Like Kate Bracy Kalb in her book (above), Ellen Dolgen writes about the need to find a great gynecologist who specializes in women?s midlife health, who can be your partner in this decade-long journey. She offers suggestions for how to research and then interview prospective candidates for this important job. (She also offers a directory on her website.)

Finally, I highly recommend Dr. Susan Love?s Menopause and Hormone Book.?It?s an important book that, besides the basics, covers weighty issues such as the medicalization of menopause, understanding research when it comes to prevention and risk of disease, and women?s cancers.menopause, hormone therapy, HRT

What makes this book stand out??Dr. Love is one of the most respected women?s health specialists in this country. ?With this book, she can be a trusted resource for evidenced-based, unbiased information.

I?d love to know about books that you have found particularly helpful in your menopause journey and welcome your suggestions in the comment box below.

Rand Increases for 3rd Consecutive Day as Bond ... - Forex Trading

The major currency of South Africa, Rand has gained for the 3rd consecutive day. The number of bonds of this country bought by foreign investors is the highest within the last 7 weeks as well. Incidentally, as around 22% exports of this African country is accounted in the Euro zone (Based on the statistics of 2011), the decision of Euro zone finance ministers to sit further and come up with a financial aid plan for Greece has further helped Rand.

Rand has already gained around 0.2% and is at 8.8582 per USD. The yields on South African benchmark 10.5 percent bonds due by December 2026 however has plummeted by 2 basis points and is currently at 7.62%.

Maria Fekter, the Finance Minister of Austria announced that the financial chiefs of different Euro zone countries will sit with the officials of The International Monetary Fund to come up with a financial aid plan for Greece. Incidentally, the earlier two meetings failed to have a proper plan in place. The main aim of this latest meeting is to plug the deficit gap of Greece; however, they don?t intend to write off of the official loans of the country.

According to the statistics released by JSE Ltd., foreign investors have bought more than $645 million worth Rand in the country?s bonds last week. This marks the biggest figures since the last period ended on 5th October, 2012.

As stated by the currency trader of PSG Online, Ockert van Niekerk, the flow of bond buying has not stopped and it always acts as a real driver to a currency?s force, it will help Rand to see further increases in the next few days against most of its major counterparts. However, he added that the inflation data is still to come out later this week and investors should also watch out for the outcome of the Greece debt talk as it may have some impact on the South African economy.

Though the actual data is due to be released on 29th of this month, according to economists, the producer prices of South Africa will rise around 4.7% for month of October, thereby increasing from 4.2% of that of September.

Churn: The Problem Of The New Tech Journalism

coffeegrinderEnterpriseA decade ago, the news cycle for a CE product worked like this: a PR person contacted a major title - Laptop, say, or PC Magazine - and offered an exclusive for a cover story. "Hey," they'd say. "Hot new laptop coming out! It's got that new Wi-Fi!" An early version of the laptop would arrive at the title's office and someone would write a detailed review of it because, let's face it, there was little else to do at the office before the Internet was pervasive. Then, two months later the story would go to press and then maybe end up on some nascent Internet CMS hacked together by a designer after hours. The circle of life, then, for a tech product was about half a year. Plenty of time for back and forth, hand-holding, and handsome product shots.

Man who performed world's first successful kidney transplant dies at 93

BOSTON (AP) ? Dr. Joseph E. Murray, who performed the world's first successful kidney transplant and won a Nobel Prize for his pioneering work, has died at age 93.

Murray's death in Boston at Brigham and Women's Hospital was confirmed Monday by hospital spokesman Tom Langford. No cause of death was immediately announced.

Since the first kidney transplants on identical twins, hundreds of thousands of transplants on a variety of organs have been performed worldwide. Murray shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1990 with Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who won for his work in bone marrow transplants.

"Kidney transplants seem so routine now," Murray told The New York Times after he won the Nobel. "But the first one was like Lindbergh's flight across the ocean."

Murray's breakthroughs did not come without criticism, from ethicists and religious leaders. Some people "felt that we were playing God and that we shouldn't be doing all of these, quote, experiments on human beings," he told The Associated Press in a 2004 interview in which he also spoke out in favor of stem cell research.

In the early 1950s, there had never been a successful human organ transplant. Murray and his associates at Boston's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now Brigham and Women's Hospital, developed new surgical techniques, gaining knowledge by successfully transplanting kidneys on dogs. In December 1954, they found the right patients, 23-year-old Richard Herrick, who had end-stage kidney failure, and his identical twin, Ronald Herrick.

Because of their identical genetic background, they did not face the biggest problem with transplant patients, the immune system's rejection of foreign tissue.

After the operation, Richard had a functioning kidney transplanted from Ronald. Richard lived another eight years, marrying a nurse he met at the hospital and having two children.

"Post-operatively the transplanted kidney functioned immediately with a dramatic improvement in the patient's renal and cardiopulmonary status," Murray said in his Nobel lecture. "This spectacular success was a clear demonstration that organ transplantation could be life-saving."

Murray performed more transplants on identical twins over the next few years and tried kidney transplants on other relatives, including fraternal twins, learning more about how to suppress the immune system's rejection of foreign tissue. One patient who received a kidney transplant from a fraternal twin in 1959, plus radiation and a bone marrow transplant to surpress his immune response, lived for 29 more years.

But it was the development of drugs to suppress the body's immune response, a less radical approach than radiation, that made real breakthroughs in transplants possible. In 1962, Murray and his team successfully completed the first organ transplant from an unrelated donor. The 23-year-old patient, Mel Doucette, received a kidney from a man who had died.

Murray continued a long career in plastic surgery, his original specialty, and transplants. He was guided by his own deep religious convictions.

"Work is a prayer," he told the Harvard University Gazette in 2001. "And I start off every morning dedicating it to our Creator."

Murray told the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2004 that he continued to get letters from patients he helped years earlier and from relatives of those who died during the early efforts.

"They often say ... that they are happy to have played some small part in the eventual success of organ transplants," he said, praising the courage of his patients and their families.

Murray was honored at the 2004 Transplant Games, for athletes who have received organ transplants, along with Ronald Herrick, the man who had donated a kidney to his twin brother a half-century earlier.

Murray's interest in transplants developed during his time in the Army during World War II when he was assigned to Valley Forge General Hospital in Pennsylvania while awaiting overseas duty. The hospital performed reconstructive surgery on troops who had been injured in battle.

The burn patients, who were often treated with skin grafts from other people, intrigued Murray.

"The slow rejection of the foreign skin grafts fascinated me," Murray wrote in autobiography for the Nobel Prize ceremony. "How could the host distinguish another person's skin from his own?"

The hospital's chief of plastic surgery, Col. James Barrett Brown, had performed skin grafts on civilians and noticed that the closer the donor and recipient were related, the slower the tissue was rejected. A skin graft between identical twins had taken permanently.

Murray said that was "the impetus" of his study of organ transplantation.

Murray was ever the optimist and kept on his desk a quotation, "Difficulties are opportunities," his son Rick Murray said.

"It reflects the unwavering optimism of a great man who was generous, curious, and always humble," Rick Murray said in a statement released by the hospital.

Health & Fitness Activities!

Though another city place like Toowong, located in Austria in the suburbs of Brisbane provides its people with entertainment, lavish lifestyle, and facilities, it infuses great deal on the health programs and fitness of the people. There may be facilities and attractions of lights and drinks, but most of all, they spread awareness among people about the health and good fitness to last long and be implemented by every citizen.

Activities like sporting events, football and leg movement games are recommended and encouraged to be played. Awareness of having outdoor activities, a good flexibility of arms and muscles as well as physiotherapy massage and treatment is successfully and popularly enjoyed by people. Moving legs regularly and not just shuffling from one room to the other, gives the health and height a good shoot up and boosts the blood circulation. These in turn, prevents all diseases that can result from taut and stiff muscles and that that need a good physio training to get them moving. Obesity and heart disease are one of an example from sitting too long at a place and thinking of exercise as a nuisance. Moreover, not having sports regularly and sleeping in late without a jog for a two miles even can lead to immobile muscles, pain in movement and back as well as joint aches at a much young age than the normal old one. Even intensive obesity and too rigid muscles can lead to paralysis! Hence, just an ignorance of physical activity can lead to so many complications in the later life, some that one can?t even imagine.

Toowong, a city in Australia is the place where they give you important, relevant and all details as well as drawbacks of not giving regular sport to the body, a physiotherapy session once a week, no physio training and exercise or body muscle treatment. Moreover, like Auchenflower and Milton, the experts encourages a patient to indulge into simple and basic exercise that could be adapted from a daily routine and not having the fuss of squeezing a lawn tennis sport in your tight schedule.? A child or an adult, a working man or a housewife, sport is a necessity for every person. Frequency of back pain and neck ache can even lead to neurological problems and spinal complications so why not accept the preventions, have a doctor do smooth massage to your shoulders, get a delicious physiotherapy session and acquire extensive physio exercise each morning to gear yourself up for the tiring working hours and abstain oneself from getting dangerous diseases that could result in poor life in the future?

Have a visit to either Toowong with its attractions and benefits, Auchenflower with its entertainment realm or Milton with education and alarming environment, but do keep an eye on your unusual tummy or joint and back pain. If you observe such, zoom down to these family practice homes for a physio exercise and a perfect physiotherapy session. Indeed, Toowong is a very nice place to visit if you really wish to have your holiday spent in Australia with keeping your fitness in hand!

Garrison claims second consecutive singles racquetball trophy ...

Robert Moore, 795th MP Bn., right, hits the ball back to his Garrison Command opponent, Anthony Powers, on Court 3 in the championship round of the Commanders Cup Singles Racquetball Tournament Nov. 8 at DFC.

Garrison Command successfully defended its title as the post?s reigning racquetball champions, earning their second consecutive Commander?s Cup Singles Racquetball Tournament trophy Nov. 8 at Davidson Fitness Center.
The Garrison team of Anthony Powers, Dave Faulkner and Renard Ellis overwhelmed the competition from their first game in the second round of the four-day tourney (they earned a bye in Round 1), allowing no more than nine points from any opponent in games played to 15.

?It?s just looking for different styles, trying to play your game and not deviating too much from your game plan,? Powers said. ?There are always new players coming on, so you never know what to expect when you walk in there. You have to give your best and scope out the competition as you get close to the final to see what their strengths and weaknesses are, just like they are (doing to) you.?

Image

From left, Garrison Command player Renard Ellis is congratulated by Danny Howell, FMWR sports specialist, as his teammates Anthony Powers and Dave Faulkner look on.

The 795th Military Police Battalion team of Robert Moore, Aaron Poulin and Mike Lynch were the tournament runners-up, fighting their way past the 169th Engineer Battalion, the two-time runners-up Dental Activity team and the 35th Engineer Battalion to advance to the final.

?We took second ? that?s not too bad,? Poulin said to his teammates as the tournament drew to a close.

In the championship round, Ellis was the first Garrison player to emerge victorious, exiting Court 3 with a 15-9, 15-2 win over Lynch. Faulkner assured Garrison would take home the trophy win with a 15-2, 15-5 win over Poulin on Court 2. Powers then gave his team the sweep, defeating Moore, 15-1, 15-2.

The 92nd Military Police Battalion team of Jim ?Doc? Blair, Damien Bangle and Brian Moreno finished third in the tournament, defeating the 35th Engr. Bn. in the third-place round.

?We had a good solid team. We came in without a lot of practice or a lot of notice, but we were able to pull some wins out,? Blair said.

Blair expressed the players? appreciation for the quality of the tournament and the sports programs hosted by Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

?This year?s tournament was great. (FMWR sports specialist) Danny (Howell) and the gang always put on a good show for us,? Blair said.

Bangle said the tournament represented not only a chance to represent his unit, but also an opportunity to meet other players.

?A lot of these guys, you might not have even bumped into before the tournament, but I?ve had a chance to make a couple of friends here ? the guy I just played, we?ll probably play each other again, just because we know it?s a challenge,? Bangle said.

Powers and Faulkner, who were also last year?s doubles racquetball champs, play on a regular basis at DFC. Powers said he hopes to bring more players to the courts.

?One thing I wanted to do this year more than any other is to try and be an ambassador for the sport and try to get more new players interested in racquetball,? Powers said. ?You don?t want to wait an entire year between Commander?s Cup tournaments to play. So, I hope we?ll see some new faces and be able to get new players some more experience.?

?This game is a blast. The rules are simple to learn, but it will take you years to master ? there?s always a new complexity or wrinkle to unravel,? he added.

Nexus 4 16GB available on Daily Steals for $499

Daily Deals Nexus 4

While many people still have backordered Nexus 4 devices waiting to be shipped, deals site Daily Steals is offering the unlocked 16GB version for a cool $499. The "list price" is a severely inflated $799, although we all know they're listed for $349 on the Play Store. We're not sure if this site got their devices from LG with a bulk discount, or somehow snatched up some when they were briefly on sale from Google, but we doubt they have that many in stock.

As is usually the case with these, they're probably going to sell out quick, so be sure to jump on one of these if you just can't wait any longer to get that sweet Nexus into your hands. If it's any consolation, you'll likely save some money when compared to the prices on eBay right now.
