HICKORY, N.C.?? Hickory High?s Carlos Sevilla scored in the 32nd minute of the second half on Tuesday night in a 1-0 victory over visiting Charlotte Catholic that earned the Red Tornadoes a West 3A title in boys? soccer.
The victory advances Hickory (27-1-0) to Raleigh to play for the state championship for the second time in three seasons.
The Red Tornadoes will face Jacksonville (25-1-0), a 6-2 winner over Cardinal Gibbons on Tuesday in the East 3A final, on Saturday at N.C. State.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) hasn?t yet assigned starting times for each of four classification championships in Raleigh.
Two seasons ago, Hickory edged Catholic to reach the state title match, falling there 2-1 to Cardinal Gibbons.
?It?s hard to describe it,? said Hickory head coach Brian Jillings, whose team win its 18th straight match. ?You look across the sideline and you see Catholic. We have so much respect for that program.
? I thought we took it to them tonight and created a lot of opportunities.? We didn?t get a lot of bounces in front of the goal. But I guess if there?s ever a worthy goal to send it to a state championship, the goal Carlos struck was unbelievable.?
The winning goal was set up off a throw-in deep in Cougars? territory. ?Jed Blanchatt dribbled to the center of the field before feeding Sevilla, who dribbled and then drilled the shot into the net from about 25 yards away.
Prior to his goal, Sevilla had three other shots on goal, plus three other open shots that went wide of the net.
?I struck it (with) my left foot earlier and hooked it to the right,? said Sevilla through a translator. ??This time, I struck it with my strong leg.?
Led by their midfielders, the Red Tornadoes controlled the action for most of the night. Hickory outshot the Cougars 7-6, but missed on several opportunities with open looks at the net. The Red Tornadoes also had seven corner kicks to Catholic?s two.?
Hickory?s best opportunity to score in the first half came when Sevilla?s header off a corner kick deflected off a defender. Nick Dixon took the rebound and drilled a shot from 20 yards that was corralled by Catholic goalkeeper Matthew Lauder.
?Coach told us to go at them hard, go at them hard, go at them hard,? Sevilla said.? ?Just keep them on their heels and don?t let up.?
The Cougars managed only two shots on net in the second half.? Goalkeeper Will Arditti made six saves for the shutout.
Jacksonville, the top seed from the Coastal 3A, has outscored opponents 36-4 en route to the East 3A title. After beating Northern Nash 9-0 in the first round, Jacksonville won 7-1 over West Brunswick and 8-0 over Wilson Hunt to reach a match against Southern Nash. A 6-1 victory over Southern Nash set up Tuesday?s match at Cardinal Gibbons.
